Sorry to bother you guys!
My friend just aquired this .38. I spent half the night looking through catalogue trying to identify? He sent me the picture and said I want $1,000. Im like pump the brakes, you dont even know the model???? 4 inch barrel, .38 special. Could it be a .38-.44 outdoorsman? I will get better pictures when I go tomorrow!

It's a 38-44 but not an Outdoorsman. With fixed sights, it's a Heavy Duty. Definitely need more pics.
Looks like it may be a later prewar. Easily over $1k in that apparent condition. 👍

Definitely a 38/44 Heavy Duty. Long action so pre 1950. If original finish, nice one!

It has a 5” barrel, not a 4”.
I’d be on that ASAP! The HD is sporting pre-war N frame Magna stocks. Hard to tell the condition from the photo, but they’re worth north of $500 if they’re as nice as they look.

Bother us???
Welcome aboard.
One of those has long been on my want list. Never thought of a nickel one. And a 5" to boot. I'd jump.
I took a few liberties with the image.

Not enough information from the two photos provided, but if it is an all-original nickel gun with original finish it is well worth his asking price. But if the seller offered it to you impulsively he may change his price just as quickly.

In the very unlikely event you don't understand what these folks are telling you, it goes like this: RUN----DO NOT WALK, and snatch up this gun!! Then RUN----DO NOT WALK, back where you came from.

Neat gun! Serial number in barrel shroud appears to be 50737. If no S prefix on the butt, it is a prewar Heavy Duty as others have stated. Check the grips for matching serial number and look on grip frame for any rework marks on right side, Capitol “N” on left side at the toe.

Yes, it is a .38/44 Heavy Duty. You are looking at the end of the hammer pin. It is screwed into the frame from the inside. After WW II, when the short actions were introduced, these pins were pressed into place and polished smooth with the frame.

If it says .38 S&W Special CTG on the barrel, it is a .38/44 HD. By the way, nice high $$$ grips! Check to see if they number to the gun. It also appears to be a late 1930's version.

Post pictures of the holster. It may be valuable on its own and there are some very knowledgeable folks here. Mothers Mag or Flitz polish. Blue Magic Gun Bore Cleaner will also take the carbon off the front of the cylinder.

A quick check shows .38/44 serial 50493 was shipped in March 1937. and .38/44 HD serial 50760 shipped in June 1937. Both were police guns.

If the seller is seeing these threads he'll jack up the tariff before you pounce.
We'll walk you through cleaning the face of the cylinder "after" you make the deal.
You're worrying about the small stuff.
Go get it.

The world famous S&W nickel finish. Lucky you. I was offered a 38/44 in blue for $800 a decade ago.
I like the nickel finish guns, I’m on the wagon, I’m on the wagon. I’m fighting it, don’t stop the wagon.

Post us some more images of what-ever is going on there in image #4?
Below the Cylinder Latch, and above the rear portion of the Trigger Bow.
Looks like a partial cut-away area showing some of
the inside mechanism.

That's just the reflection of his cell phone camera lens....
To the OP... the holster has a name and a star inscribed on it, can you make out what it is? I think it would be worthwile to research who it is, if you don't already have that info from your friend.
A pic of the back side of the holster would be nice to see any maker markings to identify it.
All I can say about the gun is... you lucky dog!!

Others have answered these questions. I will take a stab at this.

We often go back into old thread. I have Lazarused threads that have been dead for years if not decades. New information becomes available or new questions need to be asked. No big deal.
Glad you snagged that HD. Now, shooting it. If you reload, search for loads specific to the 38/44 HD, one example is the Skeeter Skelton load. This revolver can handle much more than the standard K frame 38 S&W Special cartridge. The 38/44 Outdoorsman was the revolver used by Ken Sharpe to convince S&W to bring out the 357 Magnum revolver.
Some of the boutique loading companies produce a proper HD load but they are pricey.
Good luck, enjoy it and keep posting.
Kevin

That’s the reflection of his camera in the finish!
Nitetrain50,
Congratulations, fabulous gun!
You scored a real treasure at a very healthy discount! The finish looks original and is in excellent condition. If it was redone, it was done at the factory. Remove the left grip panel and post some photos of the side of the grip frame. S&W marked guns that were reworked there and it can tell us quite a bit.
The pre-war Magna stocks are fabulous! As you were told in the first thread, they’re worth between 1/2 and 3/4 of the entire purchase price. Do not part them out, especially since they’re numbered to the gun.

When you become a member of the S&W Collector's Association, you'll have access to a lot more information. You received advice in your two threads on this gun that was worth a lot more than the cost of membership. I strongly encourage you to join and get the discount on an Historian's Letter on your very collectible HD.
BTW, there is a wonderful website on these guns at 38/44 Heavy Duty. Contact Bill (1aspenhill) and give him your serial number for his database.

My congrats to the OP on this find!...I know I should be serving prison time for paying $300 for my pawn shop rescued .38-44 HD (shown here dressed in its new Ken Driskill stags) last year, but I was assured that my sin was absolved by providing lifetime shelter to my orphan, and that no charges would be filed... ...Ben

You can find the general information under "Early Hand Ejectors", .38, N frame .38.
Info about specific serials is available to SWCA members. It is well worth the cost of membership.

That may be lead on the front of the cylinder. I have used Lead Away Cloths with good results. At first the lead seems to smear around but with persistence it does come off.

If they do not come off easily.
Do not try to pry them off.
We can help so you don't damage them.
An easy way is loosen screw enough to just stick above diamond then tap screw.

I recommend reading the SWCA webpage at Smith & Wesson Collectors Association – The Collectors Resource for Historic Smith & Wesson Firearms. If you still have questions, PM me.

That isn't an M&P. It looks like a K-38 Masterpiece, Model 14. Open the cylinder and see if MOD 14 is stamped in the yoke cut.

Judging by the "U.S." stamp on the frame, I'm guessing this revolver may have belonged to a base rod & gun club at one time.

If there's no model stamp then it's a pre model. It was made before 1958 and after 1948. What is the serial number beginning with K?

You should start a new thread for the new gun.
Love the HD.

Couple of points on the HD.
Don't sweat getting all the carbon off the cylinder face- you're also removing plating when you get to the end. If you're going to shoot it again, just give her a good cleaning and leave what's left of the ring. You can polish it bright if you ever sell it.
RenWax is a good choice for these. 👍
Straw Hat has a good handload for the 38-44. If you don't handload, these are pretty much the same as the old Hi-Speed rounds ( I shoot them in my prewar HD):
.38 Special +P 158gr. Keith Hi-Tek Coated Hard Cast Hunting Ammo
Great gun-Don't store it in the holster. get a good gun sock or rug.

We're talking two different guns in this thread. I was the guy that wrote earlier on your HD. The second gun that you posted is a target revolver from after World War II. If you can give us the serial number from the butt, starting with K, we can tell you more about it.
