1917 Commercial - The search is over
Well I’ve had quite a few 1917s in my possession over the years but have never had the right commercial variant come my way at a price I felt was good and inline with condition. Until today
Cottonwood AZ and this store in particular has always been fruitful for me, something about small town gun stores are always just “fun” to visit. Today they had a collection of Smiths and Colts on consignment and I took my time looking through them. This 1917 jumped out to me due to the condition, originality, price and the fact that it was not a US Prop or Brazilian.
I pulled the grips, checked the usual places, yep all serials match. Lanyard loop still in tact, military proofs, small logo on the left side of the frame. All confirming a commercial 1917. S1784XX. Price? $1100 plus tax… I’ll take it. I’ve had some money burning a hole in my pocket so why not?
Sure it’s maybe not as good as the deal I got there a few years back when I bought an original TL Target with pre war magnas for $900 but I couldn’t leave it either. I also got my first 5 screw 44 magnum at this shop for $850. Just thought I’d share a few pics of the new acquisition.

Cool gun. The stock style is of the 1920s decade but ship dates on these are all over the calendar; even though the last military 1917 Army guns were in the low 170000 SN range, this one may have been sold well after WW I, and possibly even in the 1930s. Enjoy!

I agree. I can’t wait to letter it. Given the factory non medallion stocks I’m thinking somewhere in the 1920s. Maybe Hondo will weigh in when the time permits with his thoughts

Very nice ,
here is my 1918 circa ,US Property all matching including the grips.
The Holster is from "Man The Line" which I have distressed just a little for character.

My commercial 1917, serial number 180692, shipped in January 1936, which is much later than most that are in this SN range. It must have been stuck waaay back in the vault.

Is there any truth to the story that many of the Brazilians are finished to near commercial quality. I remember seeing that Brazilian in the box that was posted awhile back and thinking that the finish sure looks nice, compared to the usual 1917 military finish.

Below are pictures of my 2 Commercial variants/versions. Serial number 180632 is stamped with ISPS 186 on the back strap the number 48 on the butt bottom of the left wood stock. It was shipped from the factory, according to Mr. Jinks, in February 1930. Serial number 179459 is in significantly better finish condition. Mr. Jinks states it was shipped from the factory in November 1925.
There are reports of only 1,200 of this variant/version manufactured.

SVT, that one is a beauty. Worth waiting for, I'd say.
Here is mine. It is in the 165000 serial number range. The factory letter indicates that it shipped in 1921.

Someone told me they were shipped to the Illinois State Armory. Mr. Jinks mentioned I might want to letter it. I have and am awaiting the letter.

Here is my 1917 US Property marked. It was Augusta arsenal reworked after WWI but not Parkerized and all numbered parts seem original except the grips

Interesting coincidence that this thread is running.
Went to my local area gun show today and did a little horse trading. Amongst others, I happily snagged this 1917 Commercial in the 81XXX serial range. Not 100%, but solidly in the 90% range and the mechanics are perfect.
Can anyone assist with a DOB?

Here’s mine shipped 2/19/27 in a one gun shipment to Abercrombie & Fitch NYC. Serial 1790xx. Have original invoice in addition to Roy’s letter.
