38/44 HD Ammo Guide
I have put together a guide that covers the major ammo companies and their products from 1930-1965, the time period that the HD was manufactured. If you want an electronic copy, send me a PM with your email address.
Bill

Glad you like it, I learned a lot doing it, now when I see a box of ammo, I can pretty much tell what period it was made in.

Oh, thank you so much and pleeease send me that!
If I can't have quantities of original .38-44 ammunition for chronograph tests than I can at least read about the original products.

For those of you who have email providers who don't like large files (21mb), I have split the file into 2 parts, so send your email again and we will see if both go thru.

Thank you, Bill, you went through a lot of effort to compile that and make it available. It’s very interesting and useable information.
Regards,

Yes, Bill's a hero for providing his compilation. There's more to it than only .38-44 stuff. It's a good reference for box styles through the years. I learned something when he sent a copy to me.

Many thanks for putting this together. I saw a few "BC Police" HDs at a gun show here in British Columbia a few years ago. Wish I'd had $1,200 on me that day!
EDIT: $1,200, not 41,200

Well, If you don't have the makin's to do your own chronograph tests, here are some numbers from one of S&W's tests they published in a late 1930's ad for the .357 Magnum---makin' a big deal out of all the different ammunition you can feed it.
.38 S&W Special Mid Range------825 f.s.
.38 S&W Special------------------950 f.s.
.38 S&W Special Super Speed--1100 f.s.
.38/44 S&W Special-------------1226 f.s.
S&W ."357" Magnum------------1512 f.s.
Ralph Tremaine
And they note these velocities are those produced by the ".357" with an 8 3/4" barrel.

Major thanks for this entire thread, and also referencing rct269's post 17. Many of us have a fascination with velocities that were obtained in earlier days.
As a small supplement, a link to ballistics by the inch. BBTI has considerable information on 357 velocities.
BBTI - Ballistics by the Inch :: .357 Mag Results
In the header in that link, a reference to cylinder gaps; a click on that will provide information with which to speculate on cylinder gap effect in the .357 Magnum employed with 8 3/4" barrel.

I found this somewhere. This looks like the original brochure for the Outdoorsman. It shows the original .38/44 specs.

Request sent.
Thank you Sir for the time and effort you've put into researching these fine revolvers. Thanks even more for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.
I'm kinda fond of the .38/44 myself.
