Default HELP Identify my revolver

My grandfather passed away a few ago and he had Alzheimers real bad. He had a s&w .38 special revolver that was handed down to me. He was too far gone before I knew he had it and that I was getting it, so I don't know much about it. I like to shoot and own other guns, but I'm not the most familiar with revolvers. Any information would help, I'm not concerned with actual value because I will not be selling it, but any other info would be nice.
Here's the info:
Pearl handle(broken) square butt. (Would like to replace/repair).
Barrel engrave reads 38 s&w special ctg
Serial # on butt reads c 322931
#under barrel reads the same.
Yoke # reads N 62609
S&w trademark stamp on right side

I would like to replace/repair the handle and make sure its in shooting condition, that is my goal.

Hi retherwa and welcome to the S&W Forum.

Sorry for the loss of your grandfather.

Your grandfather's revolver is a .38 Military & Police model that probably shipped in early 1955 or late 1954. Serial numbers very close to yours were shipping at that time.

Yours has the common 4" barrel and the nickel finish. The pearl stocks are not original and don't fit well. Maybe someone else can suggest some way of repairing them, but my opinion is it would not be worth the trouble. You can go on eBay or Gun Broker or a similar site and find the original style checkered walnut Magna stocks that would have come with this gun in the mid-1950s.

The style you want is K frame PC Magna stocks with the smooth diamond around the screw location. The following picture shows what they look like, except this pair is too new to have the smooth diamond.

(Note the rounded bottom shown in the second picture.)

This is a different size revolver, but the picture shows what the diamond looks like.

I hope all this helps you.

Jack

I'm pretty sure those grips are plastic. If you want to keep the gun like your GD had it, you can probably find a pair like those on ebay. Look for "Jay Scott" grips.

Default UPDATE

Bought the k frame grips off gun broker as advised! Other than a chip off the butt they are in good condition and they fit perfectly! Now I can finally take it to the range. Thank you gentlemen!
