Most expensive known transaction involving a Hand Ejector, 1896 - 1961
I didn’t receive a response in this thread, and so I placed it in this section for more and better feedback.
John Wesley Hardin’s DA Frontier revolver sells for $625,312!
What’s the most expensive known price paid for a Hand Ejector, 1896 to 1961, and was it greater than, or less than, $625,312 and by how much?

I don't think any would beat that price.

That’s my guess, but I don’t know, for sure.
The question is what’s the highest price ever paid for a Smith & Wesson? If this is it, any “runner’s up” come to mind?

A certain .357 Magnum comes to mind, but I don't even know who has it, much less what he paid for it.

There have been some several HE's sold in the $50K-$85K range the last 30+ years. Only 2 or 3 have exceeded $100k, i.e. Elvis Presley's 2-1/2" Model 19-2, which sold at Rock Island Auction a couple years ago for $192,500. A Kornbrath signed and gold-inlaid K22 Outdoorsman sold for $150,000 quite a while back, I don't remember for certain if that sale was pre- or post- year 2000.
Out of respect for the owners' privacy, the specific gun's details must remain confidential, so please don't ask. In addition to the .44 DA cited in this thread, I am personally familiar with 4 S&W's which have sold at various amounts between $500K and $2 million in the last decade or so. All are pre-1899 antique models.

Thank you, David.
Well, that answers the question. $625,312 isn’t even close to the greatest figure paid for a Smith & Wesson. And I was convinced it exceeded the record by a fair amount. I had maybe $500k in mind prior to last week’s sale. Not even close…

I bet JWH would have taken a paltry $500,000 for it.

Maybe, but he could have bought 2 or 3 more after that, and still had a few bucks left over.

Were these high dollar values due to the provenance of the guns, or something about the guns themselves?

I believe this Gustave Young engraved New Model #3 is the S&W revolver that sold for the highest price recorded. The photo was reproduced from the S&WCA Journal, volumes 25-26, 1991 and 1992, page 79. This information is second or third hand at best, but S&W was reported to have sold this revolver for $600,000; with subsequent sales as high as $2,000,000. This revolver and many other high quality S&W firearms were part of the "Artistry In Arms" exhibit that toured the United States in the early 1990s. Click on the photo for a better look.

I know the Smith & Wesson employee that hand carried that revolver to it's new owner. He carried it on a plane!

I've heard that story, and when I saw it in the Artistry In Arms display in 1992, I was awestruck.

Now 'if' she was just a 'workin gun' with a bit of honest wear... I can appreciate such a gun 'from afar'. Make that 'way afar'! But honestly, big bucks aside, I just prefer some of my really nice condition, otherwise ordinary, Smiths.
From above comments, realizing just how far I'm 'out of step'. But... Happily so!
Best!

Thank you, Doc44, for that most excellent side trip to the New Model #3.
It calls to mind the long era before the HE in which S&W shone in ingenuity, utility and, here, in that mountain top example of transformative refinement.

A Point
clang444 has a point. The thread seems to have devolved to most expensive S&W rather than most expensive HE 1896-1961. The guns listed as more expensive seem to be earlier guns.
So John Wesley Hardin's gun might still be king.
I like John Wesley Hardin.

If you read post no. 1, it asks what is the most a Smith & Wesson has revolver sold for. Also, John Wesley Hardin's S&W predates 1896.

Actually, it was Post #3 here, and #1 in the original/other thread; but who's counting?

Trick Question
Ah, a trick question. Not an expert so did not know the gun in question was not a HE 1896-1961.
Looking at Roy Jinks excellent book, "History of Smith & Wesson" I see a new model No. 3 Frontier. Is that the John Wesley Hardin gun?
Thanks in advance for the education.
My dad was a big Roy Jinks fan.

David...Yes, Hardin was carrying a S&W Double Action Frontier revolver chambered in .44-40 caliber when he was killed by John Selman. It was introduced in 1886.

As I posted above several days ago, here's what we know at this point:
There have been some several HE's sold in the $50K-$85K range the last 30+ years. Only 2 or maybe 3 have exceeded $100k, i.e. In the back of my head is a vague memory of another $100K-plus gun, but the details regarding that are floating in the mists of too many guns gone by. As far as most S&W collectors that I am familiar with are aware of, Elvis' 19-2 is the highest price HE sold to date.
