Default Tyler T-grip

I find myself needing a Tyler T-grip to match my nickel new .44 Wolf & Klar.
I'm hesitant to order a T-grip because my last experience with them was extremely unpleasant. Difficult to communicate with them and promises that were not kept when I did get someone to answer the phone. They still don't answer their phone and I hesitate to send them a check and then have months of frustration. Not a lot of money, I'll grant you, but a pain. It's been some years, so has this situation improved?

There is now an oufit called BK that makes grip adaptors. I have two of theirs. The price is reasonable and they actually ship them promptly. They may not make exactly what you want, but check them out.

I would not bother with Tyler , sort to say.

I’d go the eBay route.

Red face

I ordered some about 14 weeks ago. Their website gave 4 to 6 weeks as a ship time estimate. I have received nothing yet.

Every month I check their website. At one point they posted that their main guy was sick with Covid. I do not doubt that he was, and so I certainly sympathize. That's a terrible disease, and I'm really glad that he got better. Pretty much all along they stuck with the 4 to 6 week estimate, with the caveat that they don't really know how long it will take.

If you search this forum, you will see many threads where people say it takes about a year to get your order, but you will get it. I went in with my eyes wide open. No point in crying about it now.

Yes, some sort of polymer. If you want a metal grip adapter, the fastest way to get one is to search eBay, gb, etc. and pay the price. Another option could be a wtb in the appropriate section.

They've been like that for decades. I don't understand why they don't just sell all of their production on eBay.

To my knowledge “they” is one guy, some next-gen relative of old Melvin Tyler who took over the brand some decades back. Productivity seems to depend on his schedule and other commitments.

Worth the wait to me, although I do realize that many people in this age of instant gratification will disagree. I have bought them 3 ways. Sent my check and waited, found one I wanted on Ebay and bought a revolver with one included. For those that just want a grip insert to make things fit for their hand, definitely buy a BK. For those like me who like a Tyler for the old school fit and look? Order and wait, or pay for it online. Bitching about someone's business practices when they have been the same for decades is........well, never mind.

I love the original Tyler T-grip. Unfortunately new ones are unobtainium.
The last time I placed an order was 5-6 years ago. Despite a number of unsuccessful efforts to contact them by both phone and e-mail, all I could do was wait. After almost a year, they suddenly showed up in my mail box. Thankfully, I had ordered 8 in several different sizes. That's lasted me up to now. But I'll never order from them again. I've heard that the situation has only gotten worse since then.
I've tried the BKs, but didn't really like them.
About the only source for Tylers these days are the various auction sites. Good luck with that and be prepared to pay heavily.

You have to look at Tyler the same as any other small outfit making low-volume specialty items, like stocks or holsters. You pay your money and you wait. Assume a year, forget about it, and have a pleasant surprise when they show up.

If you want one now, buy from BK. BK's grip adapters are perfectly functional, but not as pretty as the real thing in polished aluminum. I have both, and will probably buy more of both in the future.

I was not pointing a finger at anyone in this thread. Seems like every other T grip thread I have seen has devolved into Tyler bashing. That is what I was talking about.

I like custom/semi-custom leather. I know about waiting for a quality product from a small business.

The problem I have with Tyler is they tell their customers 4-6 weeks and cash their checks right away. People on this forum have figured it out, and make decisions appropriately. There are a lot of others that do not know what they are getting into to.

I hold a little bit of a grudge because my mother ordered one as a gift for me a few years ago. She was in her late seventies at the time and was getting quite upset that she had neither the product she was promised, nor any communication what-so-ever despite trying to reach out multiple times. In the end, it took 13 months for delivery.

If you go to Tyler's website, they still give that 4 to 6 week estimate. But in the next sentence they admit that they really have no idea how long it will take. So at least anyone who orders today can't say they didn't warn him.

Maybe it would be better if they would just drop the "4 to 6" week part and just keep the last part.

Default Tyler T-Grip Update

As an update to this thread that I started some months ago. I ordered a polished aluminum grip adapted for my nickel Wolf & Klar from Tyler last August. They cashed the check on October 15th, and it is now three months later and I have heard nothing. So it appears nothing has changed at Tyler in terms of delivery. Their grip adapters are now going for premium prices on eBay.

I did buy a plastic BK grip adapter for another nickel Wolf & Klar with faux-ivory steer head grips. That one came right away.

BK, all the way. Order on line, have it in a week, and it is a superior product to the Tyler. Two attachment points, and the resin is lighter.

No shiny ones, though.

While it won't help the OP and his .44, it appears that the new guy on eBay is now making K/L metal grip adapters. Once he gets into more and more of Tyler's offerings, Tyler will have to adapt or disappear.

Back in my web project manager days, I ran into lots of businesses that just had a "this is us and our phone number and address" sites that took no business via the Web (even if they should). Or, sadly, they had you fill out a form with your info and CC number without any encryption.

With a few days somebody like me could stand Tyler up with an actual modern website, stocking counts, and a CC payment system. But he doesn't seem interested and, of course, there are no fees or compliance issues of note with personal checks.

I wonder if they have their casting work done in another Third World country and can only have a batch run when a minimum order quantity is met?
Of course that could apply here as well.

Well, that is news. Hopefully they have found someone who can keep up with demand.

For black adapters, there have been multiple suppliers

For the “silver” colored grip adapters, Tyler (primary or secondary market) was the only option.

Here are some pics of the ones from Robertson's and the fit on a Model 60.

To be honest I will probably order from Tyler again soon and replace this one when the order comes in.

Tyler is a one man garage band set up basically and that causes the delays. I have ordered and waited many times and the order always arrives at some point and I have not been disappointed.

He just has a full time job and can't compete in the have to have it right now World we have created.

Nobody on this forum thinks twice about waiting that long for custom leather, or grips, or custom gunsmithing, if it's a unique product that they want.

Tyler's communication is terrible, but if you want the "real thing", you pay your money and you wait.

We are fortunate that he hasn't packed the whole thing up and shut down, like so many other gun related small businesses.

Default Robertson's adapter good to go!

I bought one of these and ordered a couple more when I saw the fit and finish. They are kind of a satin finish but would probably polish up real nice if you wanted a nickel look.

No offense intended to BK Grips and their product sure looks good but the only nonmetal revolver parts I can abide are wood grips and a front sight insert.

YMMV.

My check was immediately cashed back in July after being sent with nothing to show for it so this thread gives me some hope.
Either way it's my fault at the end of the day for sending the check and not doing my research. I'm blessed enough in life that the 48 bucks isn't a big deal its just the principle is all.

We are fortunate that he hasn't packed the whole thing up and shut down, like so many other gun related small businesses.
I think most honorable makers would be up front with a delivery date.
Stating on the web site 4-6 weeks but not delivering for upwards of a year is unacceptable unless you know that going in.
The OP apparently didn’t know they weren’t truthful.

Purchased one of Robertsons J frame adapters and am very satisfied. I just looked on their site and see they now have them for K/L frames too so I ordered one.

About 2 years ago I wanted a "real" Tyler, not a plastic one. I knew the issues but ordered one anyway. I got it in about 3 months.

Liking it so much I ordered 2 more. They came in about 2 weeks. I guess he must have had those particular sizes and colors in stock that day.

Right now I have primers back-ordered. I'll wait for them too.

As badly as Tyler is performing , I suspect that a total collapse is a very real possibility.
If that happens a lot of customers will get stuck.
I would but the product on the secondary market, but will not send money to an outfit in such disarray.

Glad I went with BK.

Tyler really needs to learn how to adapt or they will lose their grip on the business.

I went with BK for my DS. Looks fine and works great.

I’d really like a bronze Tyler for my Model 15-3.
I’m just too cheap to spring for it.

Never had a bronze Tyler before. I have considered it, just never pulled the trigger. The way prices are now, when Tyler finally folds, secondary T-grips will bring $250+!

Bronze Tylers are pretty nice. I don't have one of the new ones though.

IMHO they are a lot better than Tylers
And much easier to order than the Tylers. Tyler seems to have been in and out of business several time over the years? With much delay most of the time?

Gotta admit , that brass look in #44 above is very attractive.
Doesn’t change my position on sending money to a non- responsive vendor though.

I am a big fan of the Tyler T-grip, and in fact just mailed an order in for a couple.

If you think you will get your purchase in a couple months I doubt you will.

Just buckle up and forget about your order because it could be a year, or more

Good luck.

I will gamble on two grips. Knowing me I will have forgotten all about it when they finally show up.
My concern here is that if he is cashing the checks right away, he needs to honor the price when they are ready to ship. I can see the cost to manufacture these going way up in the next year. A lot of small businesses have had to fold when their current costs outstrip prior commitments.

edit: I have the BK grip (or a similar product) and it is perfectly serviceable.

I'm the OP - ordered 8/27/21, check was cashed 10/15/21, sent them a polite inquiry on 2/20/22, have heard nothing as of today (3/22/22).
