38/44 outdoorsmen (LGS) find!
I can't believe I stumbled upon this beauty recently while touring the local shops! Very happy to be the new caretaker. Quick story. Being purchased locally I was able to contact the consignee and get some background on the gun. Turns out his dad bought it new in 1934 it was shipped from S&W 1933 and it was his pride and joy. His father was also a firefighter as am I and he worked the next town over from where I work now. There is something to be said for purchasing local. Here are the pics.

WOW! You found an awesome one. He certainly didn't carry it with him into any fires. Now the challenge will be if you can keep it in that condition for the next 88 years.

If that beauty was mine, I would be tempted to buy a dehumidifier with a forever service contract, have it wired into my VA supplied casket and specify in my will that I want it tucked away in my shoulder holster when they nail the lid shut... ...Ben

It’s amazing to find something like that in a local gun store. What a beautiful revolver!
It just goes to show us that they are still out there somewhere. 😁
Would love to see some more pictures of your find, I don’t get to see a Smith that nice around here very often.

Congrats!!! That is a beautiful Outdoorsman. I personally think that the pre-war Outdoorsman is one of the most beautiful revolvers to ever roll off the assembly line.
Thanks for sharing your treasure with the rest of us.

Original box yes. No tools or paperwork.
You can just make out the 4 and the 2 on the masking tape. Not great shape but the two have been life long friends. Again thx all for the feedback.

Print a pic of a Pre-War screwdriver, a Pre-War Brush, and a Helpful Hints, and ask him if he has seen anything like them in his Dad's stuff.

Awesome! Did it come with an Historian's letter or have you completed the form yet?

You guys are making me jealous with the K22 Outdoorsmen... I'm still looking for the right one!
I figure it will fit right between the 38/44 OD and 1905 4th Change Target...

I haven't sent for one yet. Just got the k22's back. It went to a local police department here in Massachusetts. I will letter it. I letter all my guns as the historical facts about them intrigues me.

Excellent score! Congratulations.
The .38-44 OD (prewar and postwar transitional), of which I am fortunate to have a few, is one of my favorite S&W models.

You expect to find treasures like that when you're fortunate enough to be able to prowl around in David Carroll's back room----and you're never disappointed; but to come across such in a local gun shop proves there IS a God-----absolutely---positively.
