S&W's bread & butter gun and the competition
I was going to have a shoot out today between my 1947 S&W M&P against a new to me, Colt Official Police in 38 Special from 1937, but the rain keeps coming every time I go to set up. So I just took a couple pictures in the garage.
These were both companies "bread and butter guns" that supplied the police and military along with numerous security companies and Federal Agencies.
I've even got a few loose "Super Police" 200 gr rounds to play with. Well, maybe tomorrow.

Back in the day , Colt and S&W had an Advertising War , similar to Glock and Beretta circa 1990 as to who was the "Most Popular Police Handgun " . The verdict was a split decision .
S&W could claim most used * Model * with the M&P . Colt could claim Most Used * Brand * ,with the combined sales of Official Police, Police Positive & Special , and Detective Spec

Very nice group of .38’s you have there. Anyone here would be proud to own. Your “garage” photography really makes them shine.
That ‘47 Smith is one I would like to have in that condition.

Very nice.
I have two of those too. A 1947 M&P and a 1951 OP, both lettered to police departments. Only the OP has a (factory-applied) department stamping on the butt.
The M&P came with a Mershon, the OP with a Pachmayr adapter.

I hope the weather clears up for you. Those revolvers need their range time. 
I also have an OP and a Model 10. Both are fun guns and it is a treat to shoot them side by side on a police silhouette target.

This is from March 1947. Need to get some decent grips for it - bought it for $300 in 2012 wearing essentially no grips.

My compliments----on both the guns and the ammo.
As an aside, do you suppose it's okay to shoot +P ammo in such old guns? I'd hate to run the risk of damaging them-----or me either.

I can relate , earlier this year I inherited a M&P made in 1946.
And I have a Colt Commando that was lettered in the last 50 produced in 1945 .

Best 38 revolver I’ve shot
I have a 1964 Korth Police pistol chambered in 38 special. Fit and finish is great, pistol is over engineered and would have no problem shooting +p ammo. Action is smooth like no other. The accuracy is also the best I’ve shot. I would put this up against any other.

My Uncle was a copper in Newark, NJ. He said when he started they were issued Colt Police Positive Specials. He didn't like the gun, said it was too whippy for accurate shooting. I have one from the late 20's and I kind of understand what he meant, but it is an easy carrying gun. It is in the middle of this pic from a recent outing:
At some point the Newark PD switched to M&Ps/Model 10s. He said the heavy barrel ones were the most accurate. He would often shoot stray dogs and said he was confident with a head shot using his heavy barrel S&W. As he said it, stray dog packs were a real issue in some of the crappier parts of town. I picked up this well used 10-1 years ago based on his opinion, and it is an accurate gun:
I don't think he was ever issued an OP, but I owned one made in the '50s for a while. I think my Uncle would have been OK with it. I only sold mine because I picked up a Colt .357 and the OP felt kind of redundant at the time. I also wasn't a fan of the Coltwood stocks - which was just Colt's name for hollow plastic grips.

I also have a pre-war M&P 38 and a Official Police. I find the action on the Colt a little smoother but fire higher scores with the M&P. Go figure. I also have an early Colt Trooper 357 with a 6" barrel. For me at least, the Trooper outshoots them all but I think it is due to the sight radius.
