Model 29 4-Screw pickup
Very nice Model 29 out of a collection that was mostly put together during the '60s and '70s. I have a couple questions on this one. It came with the case (two cases, actually), but I doubt it came with one originally?
Also, I'm hoping to get the DOB. Serial S217610

Your Model 29 would have shipped with the case shown in the first photo. It is called a "clamshell" case by collectors and was shipped with 44 Magnums from the spring of 1960 until the end of 1968. Your Model 29 was most likely shipped near of end of 1961. The accessories you have are correct, except for the aluminum cleaning rod and the wire brush is missing.
Looks like a great example of a Model 29.

Or you could tie it inside a hankerchief, and toss it in the Maytag with your tighty whities...I'd do that before I threw it away... ...Ben

Okay. I'll keep it. Is the cleaning rod original-type? I'm guessing it's better off to leave the case as is. By chance the gun came with another case just like it, but all the flocking on the inside was gone.

The cleaning rod is original, just for a 4-inch revolver. Cases are interchangeable as they were not numbered to the revolver.

Wrong Case for My 4-screw
I purchased my blued 6-1/2" bbl. 4-screw .44 Magnum a few years ago, s/n S177963 (ca. late 1957-early 1958). It came with the same mahogany clamshell case as yours, and with the aluminum rod, except that the case and tools are incorrect for my revolver (as stated by Doc44). The clamshell case was first introduced a few years later than when my .44 Magnum was manufactured, and I believe that mine should have had the blue/black pebble finish case with blue satin liner. I knew it was the wrong case for the revolver, and that was taken into account while dickering. However, the early clamshell cases are still worth $150+. The blue/black cases are $400+ if you can even find one. You picked up a period correct and very nice .44 Magnum, enjoy!

I knew I had another cleaning rod around here. First drawer I opened, but the same length. I'll keep an eye out for accessories. Seems like I'd leave the case as is since it's presentable. The other one maybe I'll try re-lining myself.

The Styrofoam inserts in the clamshell cases work very well if a 44 Magnum is not stored in them. If a Magnum is stored in the case, the Styrofoam is degraded around the front and rear sight areas in particular.

Iwanna: Doc44 is correct...it's best not to store your revolvers in the presentation cases, and I never do. Also, you may want to change the stocks on your .44 Magnum when you decide to shoot it- maybe Hogues or Pachmayrs. The expensive wooden target stocks (or Coke Bottle stocks) tend to chip due to recoil (behind the trigger guard). If you decide to reline your case, Forum member Joe Cebull (jcelect) does an outstanding job for a very reasonable price.

This has been an interesting read for me. I have been trying to sell my model 29 and not even a nibble, other guns in poorer condition have sold $500-$800 more than my price? My serial # is S2999864 case is great shape the grips are combat with S&W medallion. Wish I could post a photo but no luck there

I wondered why I have seen so Manu chips in that location on Cokes.

My cokes have the same chip but other than that it is excellent shape. I wish I would have known that when we shot it. still love it and I am grateful to have it. 20191010_203553.jpg
