S&W M1917
I came across this revolver at cabelas the other day and don’t know much about it. It looks like all serials match but the serial on the inside of the crane and the serial on the grip/barrel are not the same. Could this possibly be a mistake made at the factory?
Thanks.

The serial is on the butt of the revolver and does appear to match the serial for the barrel. I would also check to ensure the serial is correct on the cylinder in between 2 of the chambers, as well as under the ejector star, and lastly, on the cylinder crane visible when the cylinder is swung out through one of the chambers.
The number on the frame where the crane folds in (as in your picture) is an assembly number and has nothing to do with the serials matching. The condition is nice, the grips are not original. If a fair price is on it, I’d buy it.

The number on the inside of the crane is an assembly number and has no relation to the serial number. It was many years after theis that S&W started adding the serial number inside the crane.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! No they're not supposed to be the same. The serial number on the butt, under the barrel, and on the rear face of the cylinder should all match for the gun to be original. The serial on the butt is the only one that officially matters. What kind of price do they have on it?

They want $1499 for it. The condition is pretty nice and I think the inlay in the grips might be trench art? I’m not entirely sure.

No, the grips are not original. Definitely NOT trench art. There appears to be a crown over M proof mark or acceptance mark on the cylinder in the second batch of photos you posted. That is definitely odd, are there import markings anywhere?
Point out to Cabella's the things that are not right and they may adjust the price.

Would you say that $1500 is too much then? Overall condition doesn’t look too bad. And I’ve been looking online but only finding poor condition ones for sale.

Far too much for a non-matching gun with the wrong grips. $700 gun.

^^^^ What hkcavalier said ^^^^
If you can purchase in the range of $1500 to $2000 you should be able to snag a very nice example that is all 'correct' and requiring very few apologies. In my estimation, without handling the gun, I don't see that value in this one. Maybe, just maybe in this current frenzy, I could see $1000 to $1100 if I had to have it.

The serial on the butt and barrel (at least) are the same. How are you calling this a non-matching piece? The grips may be wrong but that is minor for a military firearm.

Was reading above and there was some question as to originality beyond the grips. I'll retract that if everything does indeed match. It still doesn't make it a $1500 gun.
For comparison, I won this early 1917 with a bid of $840 (I added the grip adapter) on a major auction site earlier this summer:

Totally agree, not a $1500 revolver.
There are still bargains to be found. It requires patience, looking and some luck. But they are out there.
Nice Pachmyar adapter on that 1917. I have the same on one of mine.

Thanks. Though I added it in 2021, it has that look of something added many decades ago. I wish these old guns could talk! I have an M&P from 1917 as well that would probably just tell me it sat on socks for nearly 100 years before heading to the pawn shop after the latest owner passed on. This gun though...might have some war stories.
