What's it worth?? Non Registered Magnum, 8-3/4" S/N 602XX *UPDATE Scroll to post #21*

Been looking at possibly purchasing this Non-RM
I will be putting my hands on it sometime this week at some point.
Not sure if the stocks are Roper??
Here are few photos I have
Have not gotten an asking price but was curious what you folks think might be fair......just in case the seller asks me to make him an offer??

Make sure you measure the barrel.
Nice looking gun. Definitely used but cared for. HBH.
Nice, but non-original stocks that aren't as valuable as Ropers.
There are only about 1/4 as many Non Regs as there are Regs.

It's a nice example, perfect for putting a few rounds downrange and not worrying about putting wear on a 98% gun.
No idea on a value, but the RM (or pre-war .357) folk will be along shortly.

Would be nice to own if I can work it out.....
Doing a bit of research I am finding several auctions that have ended and I would think based on those sales that this is a $3,500 most likely more if put up on an auction.

Looks to me to be in better condition than the photos show. A good cleaning and some RenWax would do wonders (I'd have a lot of fun cleaning it and playing musical grips, as I have never been a big Sanderson grip fan). The McGivern front sight and the HBH are nice touches. As to a price, I have not been in the pre-war .357 market lately and I'm a sucker for long-tube .357 Magnums, so for $3.5K, I'd probably be all over that one.

Tha catalog states only 3 non-registered magnums were made with 8-3/4” barrels…..hoping this is one of them!!

A factory re-nickeled (in 1977) 5” NRM with later stocks just sold for $4150 if that helps out at all.

Beautiful revolver. The Sanderson’s with the thumb rest look the part with that long tube. I certainly agree with RK, that will clean up very nicely.
I don’t have a real idea what a fair asking price would be because I don’t get to play in this end of the pool. The gentlemen here will nail it down I am sure.

I think you are right, a bit of loving care and it should clean up very nicely.
I may try to find a correct set of stocks for it......but then again as you say the target stocks are fitting for the barrel length, although a set of Roper's would be stunning on this one!

Looks very nice to me; the Sanderson's too. I'd be surprised if you can get it for $3,500 but from what I can see I'd pay that and not think about it long either. I traded for a 6.5 inch non-reg in not as good condition, with King sights and HBH, and rough condition box a couple years ago for about $4k worth of S&Ws. I doubt that values have dropped much and I've seen a couple of re-finished non-reg guns since then with asking prices above $5k. If your hands-on review shows it to be original finish and solid mechanically I'd think $4k-$5k would not be unreasonable. We're eager to hear what happens.

I think Jeff's assessment of between $4000 or $5000 is spot on...perhaps more to the upper side. It would bring that here. I saw two lesser RM's sell locally last month for $4500 each. Good luck Tom!

I would sure check the timing, B/C gap and endshake before making a purchase. I don't like the looks of that turn line, especially for a gun that was originally fitted and assembled by S&W's top workers. It looks like two separate drag lines to me, not a good sign.

VERY common in Pre-War long action guns, both K and N frame.

The 4th S&W Catalog (Page 155) mentions only 3 Non-Registered Magnums are known with the 8-3/4" Barrel length and one of those is a nickel gun.
Roy tells mine is one of two that shipped out on an special order with that barrel, both of those were blue finish.
I would imagine there is a few more floating around, but who can be sure.

My guess is that this NRM was fitted originally with standard checkered walnut stocks, not the magna style based on the screw in this photo being a rounded head instead of a flat head that you normally see when magna or target stocks are installed....maybe someone can clarify?
I want to find a decent set of silver medallions to have for it, although the Sanderon's will be what it will wear most of the time.

Tom,
You are mistaken. S&W did not use the flat head screw before the War. Matter of fact, Post-War Transition guns also have the domed screw.
Magnas used with a domed screw have a dimple that fits over the screw.
By 1939, magnas were standard on N frames.

I dropped of the letter request to Roy at the PO this morning......looks like 16-20 weeks and should have a letter in hand.
Pretty much know it is correct.......but really curious where it shipped to!
Now if I can just find the other 8-3/4" NRM that shipped with this one!!!

I have a lead on a set of correct pre-war magna stocks.
But the better news is that a fellow member has offered me his correct two-piece .357 Magnum box which is a bigger deal than finding the stocks by far!!
Now to slowly gather up the tools and paperwork that would have been in the box with the gun.
The hunt continues!!

They do look beautiful with the boxes, even boxes that have seen some wear, like this 8 3/8" Non RM...
