Cabelas comes through again... Regulation Police w/box. Updated with range report
I know some folks consider Cabelas the Wal Mart of the gun world, but I've had excellent luck at mine. This was yesterday:
I didn't even dicker. I got $12.50 off with my GI Joe discount, and I had a few bucks in Cabelas points so I was out the door for under $250 including background check fee and taxes.
The box has seen some wear. The masking tape is old - Cabelas had the tag on it with a rubber band.
The serial number is in pencil on the bottom.
Not sure what this means.
The gun is good, with some minor storage dings.
The grips are outstanding. The checkering is still pointy.
This looks like it was stamped yesterday.
This looks lightly used. I think the drag mark is from me and the Cabelas dudes opening it. No, I didn't flip it.
These have never been on my radar, but I couldn't pass it up. I have six other .38 S&W caliber guns and I load the round, so it fits right in.
I'm amazed at how really small this five shot I frame is. Did cops actually use these back in the day?

I found a model 36 (60's vintage) at Cabelas a few years ago for what I though was a really good deal. They had two, I almost bought both of them. Excellent condition. 400 bucks with my veteran discount.
Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then.
I would have dropped the card on that one also. Nice find.
One thing I noticed at Cabelas. The old Smiths usually hang around for months, even the nice ones with decent prices. I think they buy a lot of collections from widows. Those they can sell pretty cheap because they pay almost nothing for them. I was in there a few years ago and they had a dozen Colt SAA's from a collection in the case. The guy said they had about 50 to catalog and sell. Some were 1st generation. That had my attention but knowing nothing about those, all I could do was stare.

I do not know much about that era, but it looks darn near unfired. The grips if original, are fantastic!
250 out the door, I would have bought it, not knowing what i was buying. Nice score!

That's a great find. The only thing that would hold me back is the cartridge it's chambered for. I'm sure that had a lot to do with the low price.

Why do you think they aren't original to that revolver? I'll bet those will number, if the OP were to decide to pull them off and check.

Cabela's minimum mark up was 30% when I ran a Gun Library. What they have going for them (at least before Bass Pro) was unlimited funds. I once bought 1000 guns from the estate of a dealer. I bought a collection of 30 some Smith's most of which were NIB. If I had only known then

Did it come from Cabela's in Thornton or Lone Tree?

I have seen so many posts from Cabelas over the past year. I don't know why my Cabela's sucks so bad in comparison but their prices are always high by several hundred dollars. I always try to visit because of these examples being shared on the forums I follow but I'm always disappointed.
To the OP, that is a great purchase and an awesome price. I would have gladly walked out with less money in my pocket and that revolver in my hands!!

They are all over the place with their pricing, usually way too high. Three feet from this gun was a butchered SMLE .303 with a tag that said unknown caliber and unknown maker, price $999.
I just have nothing better to do than go there a lot with my fingers crossed.

AWESOME buy!
I stopped in the Gun Library (a.k.a. used gun room) at my local Cabelas last weekend. They had about 15-20 shotguns. Not a single handgun in sight - much less anything approaching a deal.

The big chains can be strange sometimes. Back in the old gander mountain days, they had a row of revolvers. Several K frames of relative recent vintage, all looking like used cop guns all over $400. At the end of the row I spotted an N frame, at $325. Inspecting it it was a first year production 5 screw highway patrolman with matching grips. Bought it fast.
Tried to like it, but just don’t care for the weight and size of the N frames, so sold it at auction and got about 3x what I bought it for.
Why a nice collectible would’ve priced almost 25% less than common recent production K frames is a mystery

Hit my local Cabela's yesterday. The gun library that used to have 40-50 handguns in it now had "artistic" displays of about 10 guns.
Out at the plebian counter, where they used to have layers of modern guns, now they have... holsters! Set out on display in rows.

Box Repair
Very nice revolver at a great price! Now- with a little patience, glue, corner brackets and clothespins you can fix many of the issues with the original cardboard box. There are quite a few DIY videos on YouTube on how to repair and straighten boxes (toys, games, etc.) that work great for gun boxes. Enjoy!

I've noticed the random pricing in my area as well. I've never been able to buy a gun at Cabelas, but I see prices that are slightly high to completely insane. They'll have things like a common Mosin Nagant with a $500 price tag.

Congratulations. During this pandemic I have been very fortunate to find reloading bullets online from Cabelas/Bass Pro Shop. Its always gets to me in two days, not sure how they make any money. I picked up a Winchester 101 many years ago.

That’s just amazing!
Haven’t been to Cabelas in a long time. Not one close by. But when I did, never saw anything like that, especially at that price.
A bases loaded, home run on your part. Green with envy here.

Bassabelas
I have had two bad situations happen in the last year from the Cabelas(BASS PRO)! Found a gun on line from a Cabelas out west. Went to the Avon Lake , Ohio store and asked to have it transferred there. The young person behind the counter said "no way"! An older gentleman stepped in and said "yes, we an do that"! They called the store, 1hr 15mins on the phone(wife and I waiting), only to find out the gun had been sold 7 months earlier! The gun remained on GB for a couple more months. #2 - I had a Cabelas credit card for approx 30 yrs and after the Bass Pro take over I had a fraudulent charge! I reported the charge and was given a new card number but before I received the new card in the mail I had a fraudulent charge on the new number(checking online). Short story! I had 4 new numbers in three months and could not close the acct until the bad charges had been cleared!
When asked, Capitol One stated THEY GAVE OUT new numbers to recurring charges and the FIRST fraudulent charge had been set up as a recurring charge AND Cap One wanted me to cancel my acct with the first company
but I had no way of accessing that acct that had been set up by someone else! The Avon Lake store's gun library is now a storage room! After 30 years I don't go to Cabelas! Sorry for the long rant!

I read a fair number of Cabelas bashing threads and posts here and on other forums of late ... and then there are the "I got a great deal at Cabelas" threads too. My experience is almost exclusive to the home base store in Prairie du Chein Wi. The staff there is always cheerful and helpful. I am always able to find great specials on good quality outdoor clothing.
As to the gun shop , I am one of those guys that has posted one of those "I got a great deal..." threads.
Here's what I got a great deal on ---

A box of Magtech .38 S&W magically appeared on my porch from a long-forgotten order, so it was time to finally try this one out.
The light single action pull and tiny grip sent the first round into the cheap seats. After that it turned out this little guy could shoot, despite its tiny sights and my geezer eyes. 20 yards (length of the indoor range), single action.
Recoil was light, as expected. This thing is really small. I can just imagine issuing it to a burly Irish street bull and having him say: Haha. No really - where’s my gun?
I like it.
