My Dad gave me this S&W 38 Special a long time ago. It's been in the safe untouched since 1973. I just pulled it out and it appears to be in good condition. Can someone tell me the year it was made and the model? I was told it was a Combat Masterpiece. Is it a collectable pistol?

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Your .38 Combat Masterpiece dates to 1954. In 1957, S&W began model marking their guns and it would become the Model 15. Yes, they are collectible and value depends on factors like configuration, scarcity and condition. Values are going up and I'm a bit rusty on what these have been selling for lately. Perhaps in the $700-800 range from what I can see. Maybe more if you have the original box, papers, screwdriver and tools.

Very nice K38 CM, and a family heirloom. I know of a high condition example with box, etc. that sold for $1050 around here. Enjoy your dads gun.

You might be interested in pages from a 1952 S&W Catalog. Just save it to your computer and it will be easier to read full size. These are great guns and nearly as accurate as their 6" K38 Masterpiece big brother. They came in a gold Masterpiece box like the one shown below, with glued-on end label.

That is a beauty that looks to be in excellent condition. Even more special that your Father gave it to you. Pretty collectible, keep if well oiled and enjoy it, keep it in the family.

Very informative - thank you Wiregrassguy! Unfortunately I don't have the box or any original paperwork/supplies.

Thank you for the pictures! It's nice to see more info and pictures of how it looked when new in the box. I love this revolver...
