I'm very happy this kind or resource exists. I just acquired a .32 side eject revolver in very nice original condition, considering it's age. In doing a serial number lookup on the official site, apparently, my gun doesn't exist. The serial number in the frame on the bottom of the handle is clearly 7105. It has one other number on the yoke but I read that has nothing to do with serial numbers. I am stumped on what year my gun originated. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cliff

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Well if your gun has a swing out cylinder, it has to be a first model 32 hand ejector with that low a serial number. It would have been made in 1896 or 97. If the ejector rod does not have a front locking lug, then that's the model I mentioned. Pictures would help the experts help you.

Well, it's not a first model. Yes, post all the pictures you have.

Could be a first model 1896, or second model 1903 .32 hand ejector, the serial numbers were repeated. If it has a cyl release thumb latch on the left side of frame like all other S&W revolvers with swing out cyl, then it’s a Model 1903 - the 2nd model.

Thanks for the assist. Any way to narrow down the manufacture year and why doesn't the serial number show up in the database search? Cliff

It’s in the books, 1903. Won’t be in the database until you post it there.

There are no serial number data bases publicly available for S & W handguns except for the World War I model 1917. The only folks that have a database either created their own or are members of the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association. The best resource for serial number lookup is the publication The Standard Catalog of S & W by Supica and Nahas.

My reference shows that the Model 1903, .32 Hand Ejector S/N range 1 to 19712 were produced between 1896 and 1901. Page 487 of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 4th Edition.

See my post #10, the serial range started over again in 1903 for the 2nd Model, the model 1903, which is what the OP’s gun is.

Default It takes a village

This is better than doing a Readers Guide search in the dim dark time before the internet. I would be happy to add my information to the database but I don't know how to do that. Cliff

Thanks again for all who pitched in with a wealth of knowledge. Any quirks to be aware of in using the gun? I spent some quality time cleaning and lubing it and everything, to the untrained observer seems tight and functions correctly. Any gun I own gets used (I'm not at a point in life where I can just look at them, beautiful or not) and enjoyed. Cliff

Welcome. This forum has with it a wealth of knowledge. I know that, for me anyway, a solid reference library with publications by Supica, Nahas, Pate, Clawson, Wilson, Canfield, Hatcher, Brunner, etc, etc is indispensable. The internet is fine, but nothing can replace reading what the experts have compiled.

No quirks in using it. Any 32 L ammo made today is safe to shoot in it.

Fiocchi tends to be the most powerful but still safe, though no more accurate.

Default Controversial question

I just did a search of my ammunition. I thought I had .32 longs but came up with a sizeable number of .32 short ammo. In the past I wouldn't have given it a thought and would have ordered new but no one seems to have any stock. Can I "safely" use the shorter cartridges for target experience. Some of my stock is standard low grain load and some are wadcutters. Thanks, Cliff

Yes 32 S&W will work in your Revolver until you can get some 32S&W Long. I also am looking for some 32S&W long ammo for my 1903 Model. Have not found any in stock yet.
