1896 Grips
I have an 1896 32 Long, HE. Sn. 16871. It came with a set of
red Mottled grips, correct? Or should they have been black rubber or finely checked walnut with no medallion?

Red mottled grips, (also blue, green and yellow) were available in that time frame. Only a factory historical letter could verify if that is what it originally shipped with, but I believe it is possible. This is a .32 top break single action from the 1880's, with original red mottled grips. Probably look the same as on your gun.

Your revolver should have shipped around 1904 and the factory always scratched or penciled the serial number of the revolver and will be found on the inside of the right stock. Look under a strong light for the number.
My guess, however, is those stocks are likely from the late 1800s and were originally on a 38 Single or Double action S&W. If so, the serial number will be stamped. Let us know what you find
