Default Mid 50's 44 HE odd combo possible?

Came across a 44 HE 1954ish with a rear target sight and a blade front sight, was that a possible combo for some reason?

Numbers match. Thanks

Sure; that should be a 1950 .44 Target. Does it have a ribbed barrel?

S&W made a few "half target" revolvers, but you would have to letter the revolver to know for certain. They are rare.

Yep. Gunsmith special. Someone added a rear sight at some point.

Might be fun to cut it down to 4in and at a patridge front.

Pretty good job if this sight was added.

Ditch the Pachmayrs and you've got one heck of a NICE 44 Special!
If the work was done right, I'd want it!

Nice gun and clearly a "Model 1950 .44 Military" (not used by the military, that's just what the factory called it).

Not a factory target sight installation, unless it has a star following the serial # on the butt, then it's a possibility.

You'll know the rear sight was added at some time later by looking at the front end of the rear sight tang; there'll be a slight crescent cut sticking out from under the front end of the tang. Ask the seller for a picture of that.

The 1/2 moon front sight blade is clearly the standard fixed sight model front blade.

If it was produced as a "half target", it would have a front target sight blade but no rear target sight.

Could that not be a sighted frame with a standard barrel added? Figuring it is easier to add a barrel than machine the frame to accept the sight?

The rear sight addition looks nice.

If you look at a standard model of 1950 .44 Target it has a super tall front sight; my guess is with the service-height front, this one will shoot low unless you use lower velocity rounds. May want to ask the seller how it shoots and with what load.

It is not hard to machine in the groove and slot for elevation nut with the right cutters. Getting the frame set up level and lined up takes about as long as any of the cuts. Cut the shelf for the main piece using an 1/4" end mill, center on the top strap and go down depth of sight tang. The tang is slightly over 1/4" wide so do a clean up pass on each side until tang slides in easy. The little elevation nut slot takes a special cutter, You can buy a real small keyway cutter or grind a 1/8" 2 flute end mill so it only has 2 thin flys. Then cut a 1/8" slot the right depth then use the modified cutter or key way cutter to put in the side grooves,

10-7 frame w sights added

Brazilian with cut down 1950 barrel with 45 colt cylinder

Also in this photo you can see the space right in front of the sight base, where remnants of the 1/2 moon cutout behind the original rear sight notch was:

Thanks everyone! Sure seems like a lot of work, but maybe it was a "just because I can" gunsmith exercise or a very insistent customer.

Not really that difficult. Especially for someone with a milling machine. Adding target sights was very common in the 1950s when target models were hard to be found. Many gunsmiths specialized in doing it. Although they have also been done by hand with files and skill.

Ok, I still like it, added rear sight or whatever. 😁 Maybe I’m easy but loose the rubber grips and put some period stocks on it would be Uber cool at the range. 😎
It’s a shooter and a **** nice one to boot 👍

Ya, just because the adjustable sights were "added" doesn't mean it isn't a great gun. I have 6 or so with added sights and the all shoot to where you want them to. Just completing the steps the factory skipped.

Which brings up another thought. People get all worried about sticking a 357 cylinder in a model 10 frame. LOOK at how much metal they removed from the same forging to make a model 19! I don't care if they had some super secret heat treat, (they do not), it wouldn't make up for carving of that much metal from the top strap and from where the sight body sits. Anyway, cylinders blow up not frames.

NOTE that the screw heads for elevation and windage are domed. In 1954, those screws had flatter heads.
Best guess is a 1950 Military with a rear sight added. Too bad- the 6-1/2 1950 is RARE!
Still, it is possible that it is a 1950 Target that someone had the Factory fit a Mil barrel to. Back in the day, the Factory still numbered replacement barrels and cylinders.

I just noticed another indicator that the gun is a Military- the hammer is straight sided. A Target would have the wider "semi-target" spur.

The odd thing to me is that they went to the trouble to install an adjustable target rear sight, but just left the front one as-is. Ten minutes with a file could have turned it into a more useful Patridge or Baughman style, or even milled it off and slotted the base for a new blade as S&W did for their target front sights. Instead they left it as a half moon, which is a lousy shape for getting a clean sight picture. Go figure.

Well your right. Although the slim blade and wide target notch rear sight blade with large light spaces give it a quick target acquisition, and a post like sight picture. But not as crisp a post depending on the angle of the sun.

And it would have near doubled the cost to have it done right as you described.
