Default Need Some Help With Early 38 S&W+Custom Work

This odd little gun turned up at my local shop. I believe it clearly has been customized with sights etc. it is a 38 S&W with proof markings and what appears to be a serial # of S or 8 24349. (need higher magnification readers in my truck) It once had a lanyard attachment which has been removed. Once I get past
the normal magnum type guns I am out of my league.

Thanks for any help.

I believe that is a highly modified British Service Revolver from WWII serial number 824349.

Thanks. Couldn't decipher the first character even with glasses. The rear sight as well would be added?

I would suggest that you are looking at a BSR (British Service Revolver) provided to the UK during WW 2 and declared surplus afterwards.

Somewhere along the way it was equipped with (non factory) adjustable rear sight and a barrel rib with the front sight. While it was almost certainly chambered in 38 S&W originally, another popular modification was to deepen the chambers to accept more popular 38 Spl ammo for the American market.

This is not collectible by any means but if economically priced as a shooter, it would be worthy of consideration.

Standard commercial British Proofs from the Birmingham Proof House.
These are pre 1955 proofs as they still used the 'Not English Make' stamping.
It's on the bbl over the S&W marking though partially polished away likely when the target sights were added.
N/E/Make also on the frame bbl ring left side.

Parker Hale, Cogswell & Harrison and others made quite a business of working over these revolvers post WW2.
Shortening bbls, rechambering to 38spcl, adding target sights and bbl ribs, conversions to .22rf.
..and it could simply be a conversion to Target done by a gunsmith or individual at some point.
