Beautiful gun!
I like the grips also. They have a unique look to them.
I live pretty close to Jenkintown Pa where I believe his brother had his shop. Locally Jaegars work comes up time to time.

That is sure pretty! More a piece of art than a revolver.

Yes, Kurt Jeager’s brother Paul had his business in Jenkintown. Paul Jaeger offered custom rifles and engraving through Kurt’s business in Germany. Below are a few pages from a re-print of Paul Jaeger’s 1963 catalog.

What a stunning revolver. I love everything about it. Very tasteful and extremely well executed. German engraving and wood carving styles have always fascinated me. That gun is a home run for sure.

That is a great gun ... in the perfect caliber, with a delightful finish. Reminds me of Terry's Willig engraved pre-14 posted here: Willig Engraved K-38 Masterpiece Pre-Model 14

Thank you very much for the additional photos. I think that is the first Jaeger gun that I have seen with the Jaeger Mainz on the butt of the grip frame. Very cool.

How great it would be to be able to send a couple of guns back through time to the door of Jaeger’s shop. I immediately think of a Baby Chiefs special that would benefit from that treatment, as well as a little pre-War Marlin OU in 410 ga that would be so cool!

Hey Karl,
Is the antelope three dimensional, or is it two dimensional (basically flat) with outstanding line work to give it the three dimensional look and feel?
It really is a beautiful piece. I find myself coming back repeatedly to your photos.
Thanks again for sharing,

Hi Richard,
The inlay is flat and detailed. It is not raised, although the detailing looks quite realistic. I appreciate your nice comments.

Be very careful before you have a gun engraved with portraits of the owner, his dog, or his favorite game. I have seen a lot of good scroll work spoiled by poor pictures. That is a good pronghorn but I think his leg articulation has been fudged to fit the space.

I do agree with you on this issue...

I take a slight exception on this comment as I think the legs are about right for a pronghorn antelope in fast flight. The faster they run the more all 4 legs are retracted next to their body... here's a fairly close photo example...

As a retired Biology instructor I never expected to see a discussion on anatomy on the S&W Forum! One never knows what to expect here.

Now that explains a lot... I always enjoyed my biology classes and that gives me some insight as to why I always enjoy your insightful comments.

I thought the pronghorn was well done also. It is difficult to get the look right on an animal that is running towards the viewer. My hat is off to the Jaeger group in Mainz, and incidentally a city I have spent much time in.

Meek's book has 38 pages dealing with anatomy.
What to do correctly and view the example below.
In a conversation with Paul Jaeger, about a 34" slab sided barrel for my No.1H in 458WM decades ago, the only barrel that would finish at 34" was a NavyArms.
No high quality barrels were available.
I planned to engrave a grand staff with an arrangement, part of a popular Beethoven tune, which would make music when drawn from it's mounting.

I spent a lot of time with Ken Hurst. When he engraved a portrait of a Lab’s head on the flat side of a single shot rifle for John Merz of ASSRA, it was done with near photographic accuracy. This was an engraving on the steel surface, not an inlay. Portraits capture the mood of the subject, and the best anatomicals, like the one that inspired this thread capture life and suggest motion. As with many things about fine gun making, I can’t do it myself, but can recognize and appreciate it when I see it.
Froggie
PS If you saw the dog picture on John’s single shot, you would almost expect it to bark! Yep, when he was on his game, old Ken could do some awesome work.
