Default MODEL 10 BAREL ON 1902 M&P?

Will a barrel off a Model 10 fit in place on a model 1902 M&P? Brother in law has a split barrel and found one on ebay that is same cartridge style and length. Thoughts?

Welcome to the Forum.

It depends. Does your B-I-L have a 1902 or a 1902-1st Change? The barrel diameter changed on the 1st Change and is the same as the modern barrels. the serial number range you are looking for is after 33804, according to the SCSW.

Also, the 1902 has a mushroom head ejector rod. The bottom of the barrel will have to be notched or a right hand thread straight ejector rod will have to installed.

What is the serial number of the 1902 ? That will define whether or not the barrel will work.

Shiver

As Gil mentioned, the original extractor rod won't fit under the Model 10 barrel, so it will have to be changed. But, and this is very important, the threads on the original are right hand threads. That remained the case on the Model 10 until 1961. After that, they had left hand threads. So you may need to change out the entire extractor assembly to the left thread type, which is what I would recommend. The alternative would be to get an earlier rod with the right hand threads. I'm not certain, but the right hand threads may have been the same pitch all the way up until the change to left hand threads. But, perhaps, someone here will know that for sure.

Very interesting. I have not thought about that nor knew that. I just recently got into Smith and Wesson revolvers. Me being a big history nut, it was the perfect firearm to start with. Alot of folks around have old Model 10s and Pre war HE revolvers and its always nice to know the story and history of each firearm. Hence why we are trying to save the one of my brother in law.

That makes it a Model 1905, 2nd Change. So, any M&P barrel up to 1928, when the mushroom extractor rod knob changed to the large knob, will work without mod. As has already been noted, you can use a barrel with the large knob cutout if you change out the extractor rod from the mushroom knob to the large knob. You will lose the caliber stamp which may refer to "the US Service CTG" if you use a non-period correct barrel.

At 101649. the barrel threads are the larger size, and will accommodate any barrel later than that. The extractor rod nob on the gun is also as large as it gets, so the issue may be that the notch for the nob, on a replacement barrel, may be too small. I think, but am not positive, that you ought to be able to file out the notch on the replacement barrel, so that the cylinder closes.

Another issue is that any replacement barrel may need to be fit to the older frame, which mean that the cylinder gap may be too small, or too large. This is the gap between the rear face of the barrel, and the front face of the cylinder, when the barrel is tightened up snug on the frame.
