Nice looking revolver!

The 1917s are my favorite. Yours is refinished but that makes it a great shooter, carry piece. The altered sight shows the owner was serious about hitting the target.

Here is one of mine, note the front sight, also altered by the user.

Re-blues are often bemoaned, but we have no idea what it looked like prior. Keeping in mind it may have gone through two World Wars and possibly other conflicts, it could have looked really bad.

Now it looks great. All I can say is "what's done is done." Enjoy it for what it is.

I plan on it shooting her regularly.
The only issue i have with the reblue is that they blued the hammer and trigger.

But that's not hard to fix. Strip the blue with Naval Jelly or the like.

Then apply cold blue with a Q -Tip just spotting it in a random pattern to imitate color case hardening.

Yes, those are not original grips (S&W calls them "stocks").

The front and rear sights are add ons. The hammer has either had a longer spur grafted on or it's a replacement hammer. The butt swivel is also missing. So somebody modified it extensively to suit their tastes. Enjoy shooting it!

I note a couple of anomalies, it started as a 1917, someone added an adjustable rear sight, ramped front sight, extended the hammer and target stocks. Sounds like they were a competing shooter (or wanted to be one) and modified the old war horse in an attempt to make it target grade. Not bad work, but not original.

It should make a decent shooter with the right ammunition.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass, Luke! Your Model 1917 was made in October 1918. Some time much later after that, someone nicely made the modifications to the sights and hammer.

Thanks for all the replies! My grandpa was a machinist and loved guns, wonder if it was him... I'll never know. I also got my dad's 29-2 with the 8 inch barrel that's been in its box unfired. When my dad and grandpa went to go see Dirty Harry they went and got one.. much like everyone else. I didn't think I was going to get his so over the years I got a 29-2 6inch, then got some stocks to replace the after market rubber ones.. the guy I got them from said they were black washer stocks a walnut 50s Era but I think some goncalo avels would look nicer. Then I bought an original wood box but missing the cleaning rod...its been fun and learning alot..more or less getting this for my kids, something to hand down. I only care for 1911s and revolvers and the smith's are some of the most beautiful. I'll send some pictures later today.. what I would love to have now is a 586 L comp..Beautiful..

Default Another US Army 1917

Here's my 1917, ca. late 1918. This one is in really nice condition, so I'm not sure if it was a warhorse or not- but it's cool. I always take along my Model 25-2 whenever the Model 1917 goes to the range...45 ACP and moonclips!

Frank, you quoted yourself?

I thought you meant the gold dot on my front sight in Post #2, but not sure.
