Love these era smiths as I learned to combat shoot WITHOUT Using the sights... by barrel direction to target. I have no use for Adjustable sights and will use a fixed sight beyond 10 yds. Very nice Smiths.

Wow! Very nice group. With all the talk and high prices of the early HDs and outdoorsman models, the 1950s are overlooked sometimes. If I had to bug out with just one, it would be my only model of 1950, a 4". June 1954
Thanks for sharing those beauties!

I also have a Model 1950 Heavy Duty. Mine has a five inch barrel and I understand why Skeeter and others felt the 5”, 36 caliber, N frame was the ideal. Other N frames with 5” barrels balance oddly compared to the 36’s.
Forgot to mention, I have been told it is from the first year of production, 1950.
No idea if the wider hammer was factory or not.

Bill:
Thank you for sharing some of your great collection of HDs! It is always fun for me to see and makes me remember your great display at the Tucson Symposium!!!
Question: Does S77666 have a replacement hammer (it looks like it might have a later hammer as all the rest have the flat sided hammer)?

Richard,
Good question and while I can't speak for Smith & Wesson I can only surmise that between the S77000-S82000 serial numbers they used a hammer that looks like a semi target. Here are pics of examples that I have:
S77337
S77530
S77666
S77698
S78109
So, all I can say is that based on these other HDs, that is the hammer that they were using at the time. Since I don't have a .357 mag in the S76000-S80000 serial number range to compare it to, I can't say that this is the hammer they were using for their N frames.
I hope this helps,
Bill

1956
Here's my 4-incher that Roy says was shipped in February 1956.
Finish is original with just a little wear on each side of the muzzle.
Unfortunately, the grips are not matching - 182945 from 1958.
And here's my other one - a 5-incher that shipped in December 1930.
This is an old mediocre re-blue and the grips are catalin. I bought it from Lee Jarret a few years ago. He said it came from Texas.

I checked with Roy Jinks on the hammers and the invoice does not show it to be a special order and does not know when they changed over to the flat side hammer. I think I'm going to like the hammer better.
