Default Any 38 special that’s better?

Decades ago I spent my cigarette/ alcohol money, don’t drink or smoke on a s&w pre model 14 k38 target masterpiece 6” barrel in blue and a pre model 15 k38 combat masterpiece 4” barrel in blue. The same deal I have a k22 1948 22 lr/6” Target masterpiece. I don’t think there’s a better feeling s&w action out there. Assembled by the real craftsman.

I have a few m27-2, m28’s do you think I need a m19?

I wish we had a monitored value, cost section like the stock market. Something that keeps up with the market.
Fact, I purchased a gun decades ago for $179 today the max price is $1,800 it’s still upshot. Makes a person think to maybe auction it?

Happy Thanksgiving day! You are right that those early K frame 38s and 22s are beautiful and wondrous to operate. The N frames likewise.

Not a turkey among them! And your good judgment would be highly justified by a Model 19 no doubt, as you expected everyone to say!

One is tempted to say "Absolutely, gobble one up and enjoy"!

All best...

Same to you and yours! I just purchased a US Navy 38 last weekend, looking at it as I type. Posted mine below.

What's "need" have to do with it?...I may not have an immediate "need" for the results of yesterday's shopping trip, but these poor orphans had no one to love them on Thanksgiving...

Go out and adopt a Model 19!......Ben

Ben beat me to it, Need has nothing to do with the acquisition of another S&W. Your not having one is all the "need" there is for getting one.

As I am gradually selling off my accumulation I can attest to harvesting some of that appreciation.

I have a fancy for the Model 10's.

But I do like other K frames as well.

Any .38 Special that’s better?

Well, this is debatable of course, but I cannot believe I’m the first in the thread to suggest that you stick with what you know and love (Smith & Wesson) and also, broaden your horizons!

Grab yourself a Smith & Wesson Model 52. I suggest a 52-1 or a 52-2.

It is a S&W .38 Special like no other, ever.

My prefer my 4" 67 no dash to all my other .38 specials, so I've got to say I'm a Masterpiece believer.

Do you NEED a 19 or a 66? Maybe not but a Combat Magnum is the next logical step and why ignore the Distinguished Combat Magnums. Those L frames might get their feelings hurt.

None of mine are for sale. Like Kenny Chesney says: One more is never enough.

You can never have enough guns. There are so many to choose from. My goal is to have two of each. Now I know I will never achieve that but it is a lot of fun trying. So, buy more.

I recommend a pre-war .38/44 Heavy Duty or a .38 Outdoorsman's revolver. In nickel if you can find one.

I was issued a 10-7 square butt snub that now sits in my nightstand. It’s the only service weapon, to include a Glock 23, that I shot a perfect qual score with.

I won't go so far as to say a Model 52 is better----simply different, so I didn't put my revolvers on the shelf immediately. I investigated the Model 52 at length to discover and learn about its guidance system, because the bullets it launched were clearly guided by radar. I never did find anything worthwhile about the guidance system, but it sure does work.

As an aside, I don't know of any serious shooter using a .357 Magnum to shoot .38 Special loads (unless they're using .357 brass).

The Combat Masterpiece, model 15 was offered for a time with a 2 inch barrel. If you could find one of those, I think adding it to your collection would make you happy.

Just find a really nice 19-4 and you will never regret it. I only regret that I didn't buy a six inch to go with my four inch.

To be fair now, numerous PPC champions sending 148gr HBWC from .38 brass have used custom revolvers often built on 13’s, 19’s, 28’s and 686’s, especially ones from Bill Davis and Ron Power. Power Custom used mostly .357’s with their guns, at least from what I’ve seen.

Fair enough----what are the lengths of the cylinders on these custom guns---pretty much the same as .38 Special Wadcutters, or do they have other answers?

Yes you need a Model 19 or Model 66. My model 19 is a -4 in 4inch. My model 66 is a -4 2 3/4 inch. Buy what you want and can afford. I believe need is a state of mind like desire.

Davis and Ron Power changed out the barrel, did lots of action work inside and added some version of an Aristocrat rib to the revolvers, and they often might add a ball detente lockup for the yoke but the cylinder would go unchanged, save for chamfering the charge holes and sometimes numbering the chambers.

I don’t believe there is validity to the idea that a .357 chamber/cylinder is less accurate than a .38 Special. These guns won championships at all levels of PPC, and while it’s absolutely possible that some shooters were loading the 148gr HBWC in .357 brass, that would have been a rarity or an oddity.

Regarding a "Need" for a Model 19, that depends on the individual. I have six different .357 revolvers (none is a Model 19), but I rarely fire .357 ammunition in any of them, only .38 Special. Therefore I do not lust after a Model 19. That doesn't necessarily mean that I wouldn't buy one at a very attractive price.

What do they say at both the Porsche dealer and the Chicken Ranch?: "If you ask how much? Yes you can afford it."
