I was reading the Standard Catalog, 4th edition and it got me to thinking. The Model 1955 was the first target revolver offered with a heavy barrel (excepting the 1/2 dozen or so Model 1950, 45 ACP Target revolvers so equipped used as a test platform) and only offered in 45 ACP. The 44 Magnum came out later that same year but was not called a Model 1955 even though it was a heavy barreled Target revolver. The same revolver in 41 Magnum was introduced 22 years later as the Model 57.
With only a very few exceptions, it seems that S&W identified revolvers by the primary cartridges used rather than a Model type that was available chambered for different cartridges.
Am I reading that correctly?
