Got my Non Registered Magnum back!!
I’m sure most of us have sold a gun before and immediately regretted it, and that’s what I did with this NRM. I originally won this NRM off GB in December 2015, but for some unexplainable reason I convinced myself to sell it?? I sold it at a gun show in November in 2016 to a collector at the time I didn’t know. Well, since then we have ended up becoming good friends, trading & selling each other numerous guns over these last 5 years. For the last couple of years I’ve been trying to get the NRM back, but he’s been reluctant to sell it; however, I finally got another gun he would trade for. So we made the trade, and we are both happy!
According to the factory letter, this one originally shipped to Alaska on February 7, 1940 as a consecutive pair both in the same configuration. This gun has a 8-3/4” barrel with a King ramp front sight & white U notch rear blade with all #s match including the stocks. I think its neat this gun came from Alaska when I got it off GB. Imagine the stories it could tell after spending 75 years in Alaska
The first time I owned this gun I never got around to shooting it and I always regretted that. So this time I took care of that ASAP! My son & I had fun putting some holes in some Halloween pumpkins Saturday!
I feel lucky to have been able to get this one back and look forward to shooting & enjoying it!
Thanks for looking!
Just a side note,
The Standard Catalog 4th Edition states that only 3 NRM were made with this barrel length, but that can’t be accurate since my letter states 2 were sent to Alaska with 8-3/4” in 1940 & THREEDFLYER said Roy informed him his shipped with a pair in 1939 in the same configuration. The Standard Catalog shows 1 in nickel, so that’s a minimum of 5. No big deal, but it’s interesting.

Great post Paul, and beautiful NRM! I will add this NRM and it’s “twin” to the S&WCA Pre-war .357 Magnum Database with the above information from the pictures and factory letter.

Congrats on re-rescuing that revolver. It's a handsome creature.
When books are published the authors print the best information known at that time. We may never know the total number of non-registered magnums configured like yours.
Each time one of us discovers "the next" previously unknown specimen we advance the history. Enjoy knowing you've helped do exactly that.

Boy I could see having some remorse trading that gun away!
Wonder what gun it took to pry it loose from your buddy.
Reading the letter I wonder if the buyer asked for consecutive guns or if it was just a coincidence and Roy was commenting about it? Still cool either way but I am really curious.
I like the U shaped sight and wonder if its easier or harder to target shoot?
I guess I should try mine the same time as a square notch.

To the OP, thank you for sharing this excellent story of your reconsideration, renegotiations and reacquisition!
Heartwarming also to read and see evidence of your son's carefully trying out that handsome NRM.
All very well accomplished!

Great story on a wonderful revolver! Glad to see it out in the sunshine, so many are locked away in the dark.
Like many here I would love to spend some time on the range with a revolver like that, must of been very satisfying. 👍👍

As much as I like that NRM (and I DO), I find myself strangely attracted to "trying to acquire the gun you traded to him to get it back".
Seriously, absolutely awesome magnum!

Man, glad you got it back. None of my pre-war .357s will ever go anywhere. Probably the last guns I would ever willingly give up!

Congrats on getting your NRM back, that is FANTASTIC!!
NOTE: I was doing some online research on the NRM's with the custom 8-3/4" barrel length and came across an old thread where a fellow was selling his grandfather's NRM with a confirmed 8-3/4" barrel.
I sent a note to Roy Jinks asking him for any information he might have on that gun which had S/N 60202.
Roy confirmed that S/N 60202 shipped in the same order as 60201 at the same time with the same custom 8-3/4" barrel.....so that tells me there are at least 7 known to have been shipped with that barrel including the nickel finish gun that is owned by another SWCA member.
My NRM with 8-3/4" barrel was part of a two gun order for the same gun and the S/N's are 60293 (Which I currently own) and 60257, both with blue finish.
So now we know there are at least 6 NRM's with blue finish and custom ordered 8-3/4" barrels including the following S/N's: 60201, 60202, 60257, 60293, 60407 and 60408 plus the only nickel finish gun that we know of.
Regardless, still a very rare piece!!

In doing some research into NRM S/N 60202 I received the message below from Bill Cross.....
"Tom...Seems like there is always one more gun out there if we look and wait long enough. The NRM with serial number 60202 was extensively repaired in 1941 as it "blew up" while using it for target shooting. The letter described the barrel as having a small crack in it just in front of the cylinder so it must have been replaced. I did not find the invoice as it is in Roy's records which I cannot access. The owner purchased the .357 from Warshal & Sons in Seattle so it is the same revolver.
Bill"
