Welcome! As you describe it, a .44 Hand Ejector model of 1926 (also called the 3rd model) with a production year of 1940. We like photos if you have them.

Looks like you have a 3rd Model 1926 Military. Do the pre war magna stocks number to the gun?

Welcome to the best gun forum, wonder around a bit and feel free to ask questions!
The phrase "Do the pre war Magna stocks number to the gun?" Means: if you remove the grips, the right grip panel will have the serial number on the inside if it is from the factory. It could be stamped or written in pencil (use good light and a magnifying glass because it will be faint!)

thank you for this, I googled it and was able to make out what it meant, but your presumption that it was confusing to me was correct

Two things: grips back then were fitted to the frame and should fit exactly, barring shrinkage. Second, the matching grips adds value.

Not to mention that they are worth $500-700 all by themselves...

good to know, although it seems unwise to sell them separately
- it's a guess, I have no idea really

I would believe that the stated value of the stocks or grips whichever you prefer was provided to be relative to the guns overall value not as a suggestion that it would be worth selling them. Such activity is much frowned upon by most of the members here. We all like to see the gun in as near original configuration as possible.

Yes , I understood it as such. I do remain curious as to what it is valued at.
Can't find many examples online that have the same grips from that production run.

Never use force or pry off tight fitting wood stocks.
After removing the screw tap the metal frame with the wood handle of a Grace or other brand of screwdriver and they should fall off undamaged.

Tricky to assess value based on the limited pictures shown. Assuming original finish and no mechanical issues I'd guess somewhere in the $2k range. A well used re-finished 5 inch might be in the $800-$1000 range. One in high condition, say 95% or better, probably $3k+. With original box add a few more hundred more and an ANIB example probably $4k+. Might have gone to Wolf & Klar in Fort Worth although it is fairly late given the magna stocks so maybe not. We don't see them for sale all that often. If it were mine I'd letter it as soon as the moratorium on letters is lifted. You might use the search button at the top of the page and you can find quite a few previous posts on the Model of 1926 and Wolf & Klar.

Here's a thread I started back in 2012:
Let's see those 1926 .44 Specials!
My 1926 was re-nickeled at the factory in 1942. I showed it to Dr. Roy Jinks at the Charlotte meeting in 2017. At that time, he told me it was worth around $1500. The picture is in the 1st post of the thread above and it wasn't wearing correct grips in 2007 when RJ saw it.

Just depends who has it where I guess and what the re-finished condition is; there's nice and not so nice. Last one offered to me was a not so nice obviously non-factory nickel refinish and the guy wanted $900. I'd agree with $1500 (and more) for a nice factory refinish showing little subsequent wear.
