New To Me, 5 Screw Pre-29
I was able to get my First Year 5 Screw Pre-29 off layaway Saturday. I have been selling some stuff off recently so I could afford to buy it. I want to thank Bill Cross (Doc44) for his expertise in helping me. I also want to thank Lorin (skeezix) for graciously sending me the cleaning rod I needed to complete the package.
It shipped on 12/18/1956, making it a first year gun. It may be silly, but that was an important fact in my decision to buy this gun. I believe that makes it worth more. I would rate the gun at 99%. The bluing is superb. The points on the checking of the Coke grips are still very sharp, like they were made yesterday. I got the original presentation case, mop, and SAT. I added the cleaning rod and brush to complete the package. Here are some of the seller's pictures, since they are much, much better than I could do.
This gun will make me think of my buddy Charlie (crsides), because I called him the day he passed to ask his option on the gun.
Larry

That is quite breathtaking.
There sure has been some beautiful revolvers posted lately. Probably never see anything of that quality near me.
I enjoy seeing them, although I have to admit be a little jealous at times. Ok, most of the time. 😎

Me too. Had a very nice one with a case that was redone by jcelect, and sold it off.
By the way, boykinlp, that is a stunning pre 29.

That's a great .44 Magnum! I've been looking for an early 5-screw for a long time, but the closest I've been able to get to it is my '58 4-screw with 6-1/2" bbl. I love the Coke Bottle stocks, too! Hope to get my hands on an original blue/black presentation case for my .44 Magnum someday. Enjoy!

I did not realize that Charlie Sides had passed. Met him in person just once and we hung out at a Charleston gun show, since we were both fellow Smith fanatics. Great guy who epitomized what being a S&W aficionado should be about.
He will be missed.

Omigosh, that's too pretty to own. I'd have to put that in a sealed glass display case with a nitrogen atmosphere for fear of leaving a fingerprint.

Beautiful, I used to say I didn't have any firearms that I don't shoot. As luck would have it I know own a couple that I have shot but once, I would have to see how that jewel shoots but otherwise thats a top shelf safe queen.
If you do shoot it, from experience I will attest to the fact that those sharp points on the stocks will leave sharp little imprints on your hand that will last for hours.

My .44 Magnum is one of my favorite guns to shoot. I was very fortunate and happy to find one in shooter condition along with being drilled and tapped. It even had the base and rings. I just bolted on a spare 2X M8 that I keep for just such an occasion and was at the range with it the next day.
