Default Post war snub?

Here’s a late wartime or post war M&P 38 spcl that I’ve had
for a few months. Left side barrel markings “Smith & Wesson
38 S&W spc ctg”. SN’s on barrel flat, cylinder, front of crane,
and butt are matching with “S” prefix. Made in U.S.A. marked.
This is the only 2” long action I’ve had, and I’m trying to nail
down more info. Any help is appreciated.

Yes, it is postwar. The S936xxx units were shipping in September, 1947. Square butt 2" units were much more common than the round butt variant. There were quite a few of this variant made in that serial range.

There were no S prefix guns shipped during the war. SV guns did ship in 1945, the first one in January.

The stocks don't match the gun. Those are from the 1930s. Some round butt units shipped with prewar service stocks, but not the square butts, so far as I've been able to determine. The original stocks on your revolver would have looked like this:

This one is S935954, shipped in September, 1947.

Jack is right on...as usual, except for the stocks. They are from the 1910-20 decade

Yes. That style (gold deep-dish medallions) was used in the 1911-1920 period. A somewhat similar style using silver medallions was used in the 1930s.

You are ABSOUTELY RIGHT! Sorry. I guess I didn't look at them carefully enough. Just noticed the rounded tops and the prewar checking. Thanks for the correction, Guy.
