Ivories....post them up...and what does the good stuff really look like?
Over the years I've only bought two sets.
Both sets were on guns and both were carved.
I really don't know much about it but thought it was the good stuff ?
My most recent set I liked the aged cracked look is that really a good thing to like about them ?
Thanks and look forward to learning a bit
Ditrina......your up.

This is an antique revolver, 2nd Model Russian, but the ivory stocks are extraordinary.

Very OLD Ivory Grips
This is a set that came on an old nickel 38/44 from the 1930s, the ivorys predate the gun. They are engraved with a set of initials and have gold medallions. They now grace the grips of a nickel 44 triple lock that shipped to New Orleans in 1916, which I saved from the bone yard years ago and are period correct for the TL.

Ian not knowing ivory what are the factors
That make them extraordinary?
My likes on ivory is I like the mix of whites and yellows and I also like the cracking on the bottoms.
For me my second set is extraordinary but are they in reality?

Well, it’s a beautiful and heavy revolver in which the deep bluing contrasts nicely with the ivory, which remains in pristine condition at least 147 years later.
If that answer isn’t good enough, then you’ve got me. Maybe because this revolver is mine and is unique in my collection. Unfortunately, I don’t have another dozen or two just like it in my collection.

Ian it's a fine answer.
I don't know ivory so don't know what is considered good vs bad traits with it.
I know aspects I like is about it and why I was asking in the post also.
It's already been interesting looking at the age and differences so far.

I do like ivory and I wish I had more. I think desirable ivory falls in to a similar category as any “bone” grips - fit, color, contour - and those are merely subjective.

I love Ivory on blue steel
Some of my favorite Ivory came from Smith & Wesson on the only 2 Ivory stocked Smith & Wessons that I own
This first revolver is a First Day of Production piece that celebrates the introduction of the Model 649 back in 1985.
These next grips came on one of the Deluxe Model 544s. These are scrimshawed African Elephant Ivory with very nice coloring. The grips are signed
TWT 544 close up - YouTube
Most of my Colt Elephant Ivory grips do not have as nice coloring as these two Smith & Wesson examples
Same issue on the Kimber supplied Elephant Ivory grips. Perhaps they will get more character after a few decades have passed

I have one set of ivory stocks. They are for a K frame square butt revolver. That is not a revolver I often shoot and never carry so they have found a home on one of my carry pieces, an N frame, Model 22-4.
(Maybe I need to find a better fitting pair for the N frame).

Here's a set of N-Frame Target Ivories that was reshaped and checkered by Keith Brown:
The grips are almost flawless and a beautiful creamy white.
Here's a set of Target KB walrus ivories that have a gorgeous aged grain and feel...
The above are a couple of my favorite sets of grips.

Kevin. I like the colors on that set.
It brings up another question for me.
What would happen if they were polished some ? Would you lose some of the color or would it just revitalize them ?
The questions for anyone who may know.

The first Combat Magnum engraved in the early 60s for presentation to JFK. Alvin White did the engraving and inlay and carved the ivories which also have gold plated S&W monograms, escutcheon, and stock screw. Click on the photo for a better look.

These are from Ajax about 1985. Originally for a N frame they are pretty thin. I fit them to my K-22 …

It’s all pretty stuff but IMO the best are sets cut from the same tusk, not all are usually in an attempt to get maximum yield as apposed to fewer sets of higher quality. Also and again just my take, the best is also clear of any defects, this is the rarest stuff. With that said the cracks are always unique and add great character right off the bat without the need that the clear defect free ivory can require to mellow with age. I’ll post a few pics.

These two photos show the layered effect when you just get under the bark with the finished shape.

Man, there's a whole herd of pachyderms in this thread. These ivory grips were offered by the Ruger Collector's Association in 1982, with their logo scrimshawed on the grips:
They also had the logo engraved and gold filled by Ray Viramontez on the top of the frame:
And a more traditional set on this 1960 .357 SAA (not original to the gun):

The ivory has yellowed with age and handling, just like stag does. I believe that any action that goes beneath the surface will expose white ivory.
I have polished these and my antler grips with a soft cloth and museum wax. I specify museum wax as it contains no abrasives. This merely polishes. If dirty, you get polished dirt.
(edit to add) I removed the ivory stocks and looked at the backs. The backs are much whiter than the visible surface. Same with my elk antler stocks. I believe the yellowing, mellowing, aging, comes from a mixture of the oils in my hands, the oil in my hair, sunlight and the various gun oils that get rubbed in from the natural handling of the revolvers.
Look at the photos in this thread that show the hidden side. The side not visible is lighter in all of them.
Kevin

Wow, what a great thread and outstanding examples of ivory stocks! I haven't had the opportunity to add any ivories to my modest collection, but certainly would like to in the future. Question- Are ivory stocks as fragile as Mother-of-Pearl stocks? I have been cautioned against shooting my revolvers with MOPs installed, but it would seem that ivory stocks would be tougher. Are the cracks in the ivory just a result of aging and drying, or from use?

Also what are the thoughts on soaking ivory in mineral oil as a preservative method?...Does it prevent or maybe slow the cracking?...Does it stop or enhance the color change?...I'm ivoryless at the moment, but that's subject to change... ...Ben

It would certainly be nice to learn more about it's traits.
So far I've seen older examples with no cracking or yellowing either so just aging doesn't jive right with me.

Any ivory on firearms is problematic here now, increasingly it's not possible to buy/sell any items containing ivory.

I can’t answer all of your questions but I can answer this one; no, ivory is not fragile. It is very tough and durable. It is also fairly easy to work with if you want to shape or size grips. You will find tons of advice on the care of ivory grips, and I will not offer any. But Jim Alaimo, founder of Nutmeg Sports, once told me to wipe down my ivory grips with gun oil once or twice a year to help preserve them.

Mineral oil is best or so I’ve been told, not a lot just a drop or two rubbed in. The mellow patina the the beautiful old sets exhibit will be gone with the removal of just a few thousands. It is easy to work and polishes up quickly as long as you progress through the grits in order, miss one and you will only have to go back again increasing the chance of breaking a corner or edge down.

I have had to clean the drool off the keyboard several times looking at these displayed beauties. I have been trying to buy a set of ivories for my Colt 1903/1908 for a couple of years now, but to no avail. Can anyone help?

I think it’s a tie between these two sets of ivories…..of course they’re both carved by Alvin White and both absolutely incredible!

Ajax Grips in Dallas...
Maker unknown,
Maker unknown,
My first attempt at ivory, Back in the '80s
Another attempt in '99...My rendition from an ol' picture of one of my Dad's favorite Shorthorn bulls.
I did not carve this 'pair'...
Several of my carry pistols wear ivory.
I inlayed a pair of Indian Head Pennies into these ivory grips.
The grain flows like running water.
