1941 S&W Catalogue .357 Mag Info
Think what I have is a 1941 catalog. Maybe it is something else. Know I can count on the experts here to tell me what I have.

May I ask why you doubted the date on the title page?

Did not doubt the date, just was not sure if it was a catalog or maybe a brochure or ad or some such.
Here is a pic of page 32 and 33.

In the 1944 (1st) edition of Gun Digest, all of the S&W products are listed, described, and priced. As guns for civilian sale were unavailable at that time, all that information came from the last pre-war S&W catalog, likely 1941. There was a re-print of the 1944 edition of GD published in the 1960s, but it is more difficult to find than the original. I have copies of both the original and the re-print 1944 GDs. I suspect that an original 1941 S&W catalog would be very desirable. I have never seen one.

I notice in this catalog the 1926 Model 44 Spl is listed in the contents. In an earlier catalogue once it was no longer sold exclusively through Wolf & Klar, it was only listed as an optional chambering in the 38/44 Heavy Duty and Outdoorsman Models.

Thought these pages were interesting based on the threads about the pre-war .357 Magnums I have seen lately.

1941. The first catalog that failed to include the .32-20 HE (M&P). It had been out of production for years, but was still included in the 1940 catalog. The last one shipped that I have located left Springfield on August 8, 1938, serial number 143083. Except for 141611 that is rumored to have shipped in 1965!

It is my best recollection the exclusive arrangement between S&W and W&K was for 10 years------and those years were from 1926 to 1936.

Terry
That's a very optimistic statement about the war and postwar orders. Seems they wrote as if it wouldn't last long. I have the '46 AMC. There's a much longer statement in it at the end. I'll try to get a photo of it put up.
Thanks for posting that one.

Quite a few years ago, I bought a "copy" of the 1941 catalog (birth year) with the original intent to concentrate of collecting one of each model from the catalog. I made quite a ew but never made them all.
Copies of many catalogs of hundreds of manufacturers are available from Cornell Publications. While it has their cover, inside is 100% of the original catalog, clear reproduction.

Jack,
That would be great. I’m curious if it shows the .357 Magnum and other target sighted N frame models with the Micrometer-click rear sight that was installed on the postwar transitionals.

One reason he might have doubted it is because a well known publisher of reprints of such things adds dates to such items which had no dates to begin with------no doubt in an effort to satisfy the seemingly insatiable thirst for dates we see here---from time to time----pretty much non-stop.
My favorite example is one of their reprints of a S&W catalog carrying a 1932 date and singing the praises of the .357 Magnum. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Ralph Tremaine
And when I say "no doubt in an effort to satisfy the seemingly insatiable thirst for dates-------------" that's pretty much exactly what they told me when I called to fuss about this date business. They readily admitted doctoring the various items----and acknowledged it was as a result of customer demand-----and as much as said they were going to keep right on doing it----and they did.

The AMC dated October 5, 1946 shows the .38/44 Outdoorsman and the 1926 Model .44 Target with the barrel rib, post-war rear sight, post-war style Magna stocks, and the old style long action hammer. The .357 Magnum on the first page is shown with pre-war features. The first AMC showing the redesigned (1950) .357 Magnum is January 1950, although the AMC dated 4-49 indicates a new design change will be announced on large frame guns in the near future.

Thanks Bill, that’s very interesting! Are you also saying that none of the AMC’s from 1946 - 1949 show the .357 Magnum in the “Transitional” configuration; that is do they all show the .357 Magnum with all pre-war features?

Terry...None of the AMCs I have show the .357 with "transitional" features. In January 1950, the .357 Magnum shown is the redesigned revolver with the short action.
The first photo shows .357 Magnum featured in the AMCs from October 1946 and April 1949; the second photo shows the .357 Magnum featured in the AMC from January 1950. Click on each photo for a better look.

Interesting, although the October 1946 or April 1949 AMC pictures don’t show the micrometer-click rear sight, they do state “S&W micrometer, click” in the SIGHTS area written material.

Terry...Good point. In my AMC from 1939 the sights are described as...Choice of any standard target sights (for sights employing ramp bases an additional charge of $2.50 is made). In addition, stocks are a choice of S&W Magna or square stocks.
