Welcome aboard!
You have a “.357 Magnum” from the early 1950’s. Barrels are measured from the front of the cylinder, so your’s is probably a 6”.
It’s built on the N frame (large) and evolved into the model 27 when numbers were assigned in the late 1950’s. These are great guns and were the premier revolver produced by S&W. The were offered in a variety of barrel lengths (3.5”, 4”, 5”, 6”, 6-1/2” and 8-3/8”), could be had in high polish blue or nickel and were the only revolver with a checkered topstrap and rib to reduce glare.

Welcome! This model is called (wait for it) - .357 Magnum. Easy to grab that name when you make the first gun in that caliber. It dates to sometime in the early 1950s. Be sure you measure the barrel from muzzle to cylinder face, 6” was a common standard length at that time.
A few years later a similar gun would also be named the model 27.
Chad beat me to the answer!

Pete, your .357 Magnum is known as a Pre-Model 27 and without checking my SCSW reference probably shipped from the factory around 1952/53. The barrel length should be measured from the front of the cylinder and is probably a 6”. If the barrel is truly 5 1/2” then it was either a special order or it has been cut down to that length. Some pictures of your revolver would help with further assessments.

I think if you carefully measure the barrel it will come in at 6 1/2 inches.

The SN falls in the range of 1951-52. 5-screws, 6-1/2" barrel, short-throw hammer. Yours has some finish issues, but the SCSW lists even fair condition at $450, Good is $600, VGC is $900. Those are 5 year-old values.

Some interesting grips on it.
They are later than the gun but "cool"

Welcome to the forum and nice gun!
Officially S&W called your model the "Model of 1950 .357 magnum". Because it was eventually given the model number 27 in mid 1957, the collector nickname for your gun is 'Pre Model 27.
Shoot and enjoy!

Welcome! You have a very nice .357 Magnum, with some interesting stocks (grips). It's got some character, and should clean up nicely with a little TLC.

Just for clarity, those figures were out of date when the book was published. Today, they are WAY LOW.
People love those older ones! I would check the selling prices of similar S&Ws on Gun Broker. My wild guess is that you could add $500 to each of those prices and still be low!

Pete, are the grips plastic like or wood. Hard to tell on my small screen, but could be Osage Orange wood or Catilin (kinda a yellow plastic used by John Wayne) or something completely different.

Why does that barrel look 7" long to me?

I believe Bill is right. Look at the way the tape measure is lined up. It isn't right above the front of the cylinder and overruns the muzzle slightly. That's a 6 1/2" barrel; I'd bet my bottom dollar on it.

Precisely what I meant. The way values have jumped in the last 6 years, I'd add about 25-30% to what the catalog says, for all conditions.

... and if a 6 1/2" barrel, probably a bit of a premium there over a 6", I'd say.
