They both look like Tylers. Pachmahr also made them, the one I have is plastic. my Tyler is aluminum.

They are both Tyler T-Grips. They are almost all solid aluminum with the color applied. A long time ago a few were cast from bronze. (Too much like work-which is a common theme at Tyler these days!)
20 some years ago I bought a bunch of T-Grips, about 275, and sold them at gun shows. People flocked to my table, I probably sold 100 the first day. Almost every single one sold was for a S&W. I'm down to about 85 and the are all for Colts, nobody buys Colt revolver accessories anymore!

I believe the brass is an original Tyler. I had one on a Centennial a few years ago. The Tyler has departed my possession, but not the Centennial. The Tylers with no markings are newer production. If I remember correctly I ordered the brass ones for both J an N frames around 2010. Both have escaped.

Your brass one is newer production that was most likely made within the past 25 years. Tyler stopped stamping the sides with "Tyler's Grips/Okla. City" a long time ago. And I don't recall ever seeing the brass colored ones until around maybe early or mid 2000s. The vintage Tyler's were either polished aluminum or black.

I'm thinkin' there were also some Tyler's that had an anodized gold finish at some point in time.

Yes concerning gold-anodized Tyler T-Grips. I have a couple of those somewhere. I don't care for the gold color, so they remain in the original Tyler boxes.
A very long time ago I bought a small sackfull of those in various colors and for various guns for $1 each.

I am intrigued by these things, but have no idea of their purpose? Can someone enlighten me? Are they for larger hands, or to protect your middle finger knuckle from the trigger guard??

Little bit of both. Without it my hand sits very high into the gun. While desirable to a point and especially on a semi it's too much of a good thing. The web of my hand goes above the grip frame on J frames, D frames without one.
The additional length also fills the hand a bit better without adding width, helps with concealment too.

The grip adapter saves some of us from getting a knuckle bashed by the trigger guard.
I have heard the brass-looking adapters referred to as brass and as bronze.
Which is it?
(Looks like brass to me.)

Makes this little J frame feel a little more substantial in my hands. A worthwhile addition for me.

Mine needed a bit more beefing up than just the T-grip.
