Default Post war 44 Special

I am almost finished with my N frame collection. I still need one of these in 45 ACP. I have not had the grips off yet. It is not perfect, but it is nice enough. I have been looking for a very long time for one.

Nice looking revolver. I am not up on the various models of 44 S&W Specials but that is in good shape. Should be a fine shooter or carry piece.

Don’t we all! Not many fixed sighted 45 ACP revolvers were built in the 1950 configuration. The Model 1950 Army 45 ACP revolver was built with a 5 1/2” barrel. If there were any made with a 4” barrel, it was damn few. Heck, the 1950 Army was only made from 1950 through 1966 and not many were made, less than 4000. Good luck on your search, they are out there!

Here is mine, the front sight has been modified to make it easier to hit the target.

That’s a very nice.44! Mine has considerably more wear, but is a great shooter. As Lee said you wonder where they’ve been and what they’ve done. This one starts its journey in Ohio and was found in Tulsa.

My guns are not all perfect, but if I get a post war 45, I think I have one of every N frame. There are a few I could upgrade, some probably not. It is funny how we pay so much more for the last few. This 44 is my idea of a perfect gun to carry around the farm.

Very nice Model of 1950 .44 Military! The 4” barrel is the most common.

Like Lee, I love the guns that have 'been there, done that', and mine is in the nice enough category as well.....it seems that Kings helped a little along the way.

1951 Military .44 is a personal grail piece for me. I am fond of the 2nd Model H.E. and in the right length it would be a tough choice as to which would be favored, 4 or 5"....tough. Congrats on your success of finding one.

I am getting more and more fond of it by the hour. I carried an 80s vintage model 24 for many years, but have come to prefer fixed sights. With a grip adapted and a set of stag Magnas, this would be hard to leave behind. I did check the grips and they are numbered to the gun.

Yes, that is just about perfect. It appears to me that the 1950 44s were all used a lot. I guess they have always had what people wanted. I wonder if we were all reading Skeeter Skelton stories.

Revolver perfection indeed. Honestly, the N frame 1950 Military Model and the Model 58 I think are the best, short of the Manurhin 73...say now...Dang! What if Beretta got Manurhin to start cranking out the 73 in .44 and/or .45? Now THAT would be something I'd dump over $3k on.

Anyway, I think those N frames in .41 mag and .44 Spl are the best police revolvers out there. I'd happily take any of those over angry Tupperware.

Yep... I have a bunch 28/27's but no 1950 Mil. As Ive posted before I have NO usage for adj sights and removed the rear adj and replaced with a Gutter rear on my 4 inch 28, I was taught to snap shoot where fixed sights are essential. I have a MR 73 on order with a 5 month time frame... saved up the $$ last year.

The revolver in post 15 is my idea of the ultimate Police revolver, the Model 22-4.

I don't usually have anything interesting to add to a thread, but this is something I just picked up Friday. It is sort of a post war .44 hand ejector but sort of isn't. I'll let everyone figure it out on their own. And don't blame me for it, I bought it this way. The grips should give it away. The worst part is, it came stuffed in the original box. It's a 5" N frame, what's not to love.

If anyone can recommend a good poa and poi load for a fixed sight .44 spl I'd appreciate it. I've only loaded .44 spl for a carbine.

Is it a Model 58 or 520 with a prewar 44 Special barrel and bored out cylinder?

It’s a 520 frame with a 2nd model 44 hand ejector 5” tube and a model 24 cylinder. Amazingly. For not being refinished, all the blueing matches pretty well. The sad part is that I got the original box with it.

Here are my .45 HE Model 1950 Military and Model 1950 .44 Military. The .45 has a wide, flash chrome trigger that I should probably replace one of these days with a case hardened.

I have three .44 specials, all Rugers (sadly, no Smiths ATM). Two are fixed sight Vaqueros. The third is a GP100. I handload, and find the standard recipes for "cowboy" loads with 200 and 240 CSWC's are very accurate. For full power .44's, I use the Skeeter loads with the Keith bullet. Also very accurate. I would expect the same accuracy for the Smith .44's.

I now have 4, thanks to six loose 44 special cartridges that sat in my safe for 10 years. Don't know where they came from, but I needed a 44 special from which to shoot them... you know how it goes, you can't have just one. This is the last one I bought. It looks to have been around.
