I recently came into posess ion of this vintage Jovino Company catalog from 1955 (pre Effector eraa). I have scanned the first 2 pages of the catalog which are dedicated to S&W plus a couple of pages of accessories. Not shown are 2 full pages dedicated to Colt or pages showing other manufactures. I scanned these in pdf format so you will have to open by clicking on them.

In 1955 I was 7 and used to go to a couple of local gun shops with my dad. When we were in the larger neighboring city we’d head down town to the pawn shops that carried guns. It was like a visit to the candy store but better. In the 60’s my dad used to get the Shooters Bible. I spent many hours looking and dreaming about those guns. I wasn’t really aware of price because I was too young to even think about buying one but always loved looking at them and dreaming.

My dad was a sports car, photography (cameras) and gun nut. Every Saturday he and I would go to either a car dealer, camera store or gun shop and window shop. In those days department stores sold cameras and guns and hardware stores often sold guns and ammo.

Prices are all relative. In the early 60’s my dad was considering buying a new Porsche 356C. I think it was around 1962 and at the time they ran about $4000, the same as a new Lincoln Continental. In 1989 I bought a new Porsche and paid about $70,000. A new VW Karman Ghia was about $1,400 and the custom home they had built in 1957 was $13,500. In 1998 I bought a nice condition 1971 Karman Ghia and restored it. I sold it for nearly $20,000. Of course a good salary at the time, 1955, was $14,000 a year. Groceries for the 4 of us ran $6-8 a week and gasoline was 17 cents a gallon and as low as 14 cents. When I entered college in 1967, (University of TN) tuition and fees were $136 a quarter and my first car, a used 1965 Plymouth with 25,000 miles was $250. Gas had risen to 25 cents a gallon but occasionally could be found for 17 cents.

Everything goes up in price and hopefully our wages do too. The high prices were paying for our toys today will be even higher next year. Ten years from now, wow! They’ll be double or more. Just in the last year or two it seems like quality used Guns have risen in price in my area 20% or more. My house has doubled in value in less than five years and I can sell my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for almost what I pad for it eight years ago.

Pretty crazy!

Broad prices on a variety of objects seldom magically “rise” together. It’s not the prices rising, it’s the currency’s value declining. If people understood this, they would understand how they’ve been cheated and who did it.

Or just let it continue. Our choice.

The are "come alongs". A copy would wrap the chain around a suspects wrist and twist to tighten. Then it is used to lead a suspect wherever. Reluctance lead to tightening the tist which is very painful. I have a set of Jovino marked 'twister' which I had in our display at the Tulsa SWCA Symposium this past summer.
Also in the photo is a Jovino marked police whistle and a NTC police call box key.

I think we called those twist hand restraints "Nippers"
The metal whistle would freeze to your lips in cold weather so the plastic replacement was well received.
