Default Interesting 1905 Hand Ejector

Hey guys, I have an interesting 1905 Hand Ejector. The barrel and cylinder assembly numbers match, the rest of the gun matches, so I assume it was an "unwanted" caliber such as .32-20 and converted to .38 special. Have you guys seen one like this? The craftsmanship is pretty good on the frame work and the grips feel great. Are there gunsmiths out there that can tighten up the lockwork?

It would help if you added a picture of the right side of the barrel and a serial number? Also, images of the rear of the cylinder and the muzzle would help determine what, if any, alterations were made to the revolver.

About the only thing we can say about the gun is that you have what is called a Military & Police, 4th Change Target, made sometime after 1926. Of course the stocks are not original, but the condition appears to be quite nice. Lastly, tell us what is wrong with the lock-work. With the revolver in such nice condition, it should not be loose??

This was originally a round-butt, and someone welded on a butt attachment to make it more of a square butt. Does it have the 5th frame screw in front of the trigger guard?

What are the two serial number that you have? The frame still has the early trigger return mechanism, so if it was originally a 32-20, the frame serial number should be less than 22426. Otherwise, if it was originally a 38, then the serial number should be less than 73250.

The original butt of the frame should have the original serial number, unless it has been removed. It may be the same as the number on the butt now.

Regards, Mike Priwer

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass!d That is a VERY interesting target revolver. It appears to have been made between 1919 and 1936 based on the small S&W trademark stamp, barrel shaped extractor rod and rebound slide-type trigger return. Of course, barrel, cylinder and sight changes could be in play with all the modifications to the grip frame. I'd like to see some more pictures that are better lighted.

That very unique. Seems to me a target shooter has kind of “Bisleyized” (I just made up this word, patent pending) the grip frame to suit his needs.
Would be fun to see how it shoots and compare it to a normal target model.

Default More pics

OK, here's some more pics. When I say loose, I don't mean end shake, that is pretty good. It seems like the bolt is loose in the frame letting the cylinder wiggle a bit.

You know I think I held that gun in a gun show a couple years back. Was it bought from the Pa area?

Felt wonderful in the hand and the grips were shaped narrow and very well to the frame. Ended up passing as the serial number was gone on the butt and thought it could become problematic.

If its not the same gun I now wonder if a gunsmith was performing these commonly.

Hey Rich, yep I bought it from Gene the evil Santa at Oaks. How it felt in the hand was the reason I bought it. The serial number is visible on the original butt, but not sure if the last digit is.

Can you see the serial number stamped on the bottom of the original section of the grip frame above the piece added onto the bottom? The flat spot that the red arrow is pointing to in the attached picture?

Just saw Gene at the Trevose gun show.
I always wondered about that gun and was pretty bummed I could not pull the trigger LOL

I hope you enjoy that gun but you better NEVER lose those grips or you will need to hire someone to make the next set. Think I would letter that gun as maybe it has a story to tell.

PS by the looks of the inside of the grips it might of been weighted at one time

Isn't it the same as the cylinder?

Looks like the butt serial number is 617536 or 817332 could be the same as the cylinder #. It's hard to tell

I'd say 617533, matching the number on the rear face of the cylinder. On my list are 618788, shipping in 1/30 and 619781, shipping in 4/30.

Why would anyone go through the trouble of all that metal work when the spaces could be taken up with wood from custom carved stocks?......

Maybe just to show that he could weld the frame up to make it what he wanted it to be.

Frank DeHaas, the single shot rifle guru, took a side trip into revolvers.
He bent the front strap of a New Service or 1917 Colt down to the middle of the trigger guard like the added piece on this S&W.
Seems like filler grips would be a simpler approach, but I guess people just want to tinker.
Frank also made his own adjustable sight rather than just install a Smith, Micro, or King.

"Interesting" is an understatement. I've never seen anything like it. I sure wish I could talk to the guy who did the work and ask him - "What in the heck were you thinking?" Regardless, it looks like a super fun, very modified gun with a very "interesting" history... ...I just wish we new more of the history.

Thanks for sharing with the rest of us,

Default Feel in the Hand

I have small hands, and the grips are slim and it feels just right to me. Love the long double action, smooth and light trigger pull. Single action is super crisp and light. Still haven't found an accurate load for it though. Any suggestions would be helpful. Anyone have any idea what gunsmith may have done the work?
