Default M27 Cokes

I’m looking at a M27 with Cokes on it. I only have a couple dark pics of it at this point.

I’d like to pursue it, but wanted to know if Coke stocks were issued for the M27? If so, how common and what premium would they add?

Would appreciate opinions.

Thanks, Mark

Are you sure they are Cokes? They don't look right.

No I’m not, but that is how they are being represented.

Cokes have a somewhat larger checkered area, and they were not offered as standard for the Model 27.

Mark:

A few points:

1. Those are not S&W factory grips - they do not have medallions. They look nice and have a larger checkered area, but they are not "cokes".

2. the oversized target grips ("cokes") were not a catalogued option on the Model 27, or it's predecessors. I believe that there have been a few that letter as shipping with the oversized "coke" grips. Not common.

3. Cokes on a model 27 does not necessarily add value as it means that the original numbered grips were not with the gun.
If you are comparing pricing against other model 27s without their original grips, I would probably adjust the value by the differential between coke grip prices ($400-$600 if mint) and the cost of the original grips (most likely diamond magnas).

4. All of the above said, value would be something that I evaluated at as it relates to the specific gun I was looking at, including all of the features - barrel length, finish, grips, condition, box, paperwork, tools, provenance, etc...

Good luck,

Richard,

Thank you for the clarification on ID, and the back story about finding cokes in this situation.

Exactly what I was looking for.

Best, Mark

Do you know the age of the gun? That's a 5-screw gun, walnut magnas were the original stocks, with the S&W medallion and a diamond around the escutcheon. Oversized target stocks were standard after 1975, but could be special ordered, but, as RKmesa pointed out, those do not have the medallion.

That one has a standard trigger and semi-target hammer. I'm not sure what years the 5th screw or 4th screw was deleted, but I believe both were gone by 1961 or so. What's the asking price on that revolver, even with aftermarket stocks it is a very desirable gun.

Moreover, the fifth screw is plainly visible. That means it is NOT a Model 27. It would be fun to know the serial number . . .

It does, doesn't it? We definitely need more/better pictures, I want to see the inside of the yoke cut and the bare butt frame.

Absolutely. The upper sideplate screw was eliminated somewhere around SN S172000 in 1956. Model numbering started around 1958.

Thanks all for the replies and information.

So I spoke with the seller, and the grips are a “knockoff” rosewood Cokes, and the gun is a pre 27……SN# S84,xxx.

Cool! A .357 Magnum serialized at S81295 shipped in December, 1950. That's pretty close to yours.

Those grips are most likely Eagles without the optional medallions. I have purchased 1 M27 that had Cokes on it. I did not letter, but was a near mint 1960 no dash revolver and it would not surprise me if they were not shipped with it at the time. But they were not the standard for the time like with the .44.
