Hello Dave .... It is 1954 to 1955 according to my "book". 1954 was the first year of mfg for the HP.

Welcome! It is an early example with an estimated production year of 1954. Its official age or ship date was likely that year or the next one. If you are able to post, we like photos!

SN S126972 shipped in Feb 1955, so late 1954 for your revolver sounds reasonable to me, but then again, S&W did not ship in SN order so it could be earlier or later. That said, late 1954 is a reasonable expectation.

Stocks are nice but much later than the gun. Should have diamond magnas which can be found on eBay and elsewhere. Very nice, enjoy it.

Thanks for the heads up...I know very little about these. My dad is a retired LEO, and he said he wasn't too familiar either, hence me posting here. Very cool gun, so great to shoot

One other question, there is a 5 digit number on the yolk...does that mean anything? 31797?

You should see the number on the yoke, frame under the cylinder, the side of the grip frame, and on the sideplate back (I think). It shows the parts were originally assembled together and (if the numbers match) stayed that way.

Here's what they look like:
This is a .357 Magnum from 1952 (the HP's older, more sophisticated brother).

Mine is a 61-62 model and came with later, maybe 70s target stocks. I decided to leave it they way it is because, for one, I like target stocks and even if I did find diamond panel magnas they wouldn't be original anyway. Back then, stocks were numbered to match the frame.

With very few exceptions, target stocks were not numbered to the frame. Prewar service stocks were and Magnas (also service stocks) were numbered after the war until the 1980s or so.

Didn't know that. But, if I read your post correctly, the original magna stocks on both mine and OPs 28s would have had the matching frame numbers on them. So even period correct diamond magnas would be obvious replacements?

Hey Dave. Welcome to the Forum from Kansas. The Highway Patrolman is a classic Smith&Wesson and is a great one to have if you just have one. Quite dazzling. Enjoy.

The HP is a great option if you like the N frame and the 357...... but a family Highway Patrolman..... that is a grail gun. Enjoy your range time with it. And all the memories that go along for the ride.

My factory letter tells me a pre M28, serial # S116623 with 4 inch bbl., blue and checkered walnut grips was shipped on September 27, 1954 to Kelly How Thompson Co., Dulluth, MN.
Hope that helps.

Nice gun! Congratulations! Welcome to the FORUM also. My 28 is later than yours. {1960} S2011xx. The stocks pictured are what they should look like if you wish Targets. Bob
