Periodically I will hear people mention having slightly unusual classic 4 inch SB M&P's.
During the late 1920's into the 1930's, S&W used to make up a special 4 inch .38 Special SB M&P for sale to recruits at NYPD. This was eventually termed (by S&W) the New York Police Target Model.
Basically a specially sighted M&P with a special front sight width, 3.25-3.5 pound trigger and grooved backstrap and checkered or grooved trigger.
I was on the phone with S&W today asking about some invoices from many years ago and had to go digging through some uncataloged files of mine. I found many references to the New York Police Target Model and scanned perhaps a score of them into a single .pdf file if anyone wants to read it.
