model of 1899
Did S&W make early models of the model 1899 with no barrel markings? The serial # is 2100 with hard rubber grips no military markings?

Yes. Many early 38 Mod 1899s do not have markings on the sides of the barrels.

You can do a search on Model of 1899 or M&P 1st Model and there are quite a few posts regarding the 1899. If I recall correctly there were only 20,000 made.

From the data I gathered for the .38 series, caliber roll markings started at about serial number 7400.

I believe all of those 1899s in 32-20 were barrel stamped .32 Winchester.

I have never seen a 32 Winchester without the stamping on the barrel. The 1899 38 around #7400 would have shipped in 1900. Using the SWCA database, I also find no examples of 32 Winchester 1899s being shipped in 1899, so makes you wonder if any were ready for sale in 1899? I do not believe many 38 1899s were shipped in 1899 either. It makes sense that both calibers would have needed stampings to differentiate them once they were available for sale. Perhaps there were several thousand 38 1899s made before production started on the 32 Winchester, so no need to stamp the barrel with the early 38s??

Mike is being too modest here. There is a thread here in which he documented all the model of 1899 barrel rollmark information from Forum members. Will post a link to it if I can find it later.
Edit to add: The thread is on the SWCA subforum on the site. A powerful incentive to join!

My notes indicate that the highest SN 1899 known with no barrel caliber stamping is 7485. That information may be out of date.
