Went by the pawn shop today and saw this in the junk box behind the counter. He had it back there because the ejector return spring is weak or broken. It still works fine, just have to push the ejector back down after ejecting cases. Not much finish left but works great otherwise. I have an 1896 .32 without the barrel lug but never saw a K frame without one. It is 38 special but I can't find the caliber on it.
The serial is 6561. Any info on this model and its history would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hi, Louisiana, that's a Model 1899...first model .38 Special hand ejector and the ancient predecessor to the Model 10. S&W didn't start stamping calibers until a few years later. The action is made up of flat springs and levers...nothing like the modern rebound slide trigger return that's been around since 1905. One of the experts will be along shortly to fill you in on more details.
The Model 1899 was the first of the S&W K-frame line, so it is usually called the First Model. A little later, the same model chambered in .32-20 (.32 Winchester) became available. Yours likely shipped sometime in 1900. Due to the difficulty of obtaining repair parts, I would suggest severely limiting firing it.
You are very fortunate it still has its original extractor rod knob.
My post are not going through, I’ll try this one again.
Yes, bought it!
Turned out that the spring was missing. Just put 20 cowboy action loads through it and did great. Hits a little low of aim but that’s the weak loads, I’m sure. I will install a new spring tomorrow and she should be good to go.
The drips are a little worn but are original, have the serial number penciled under them.
Paid $180 and I’m satisfied.
Not as good a deal as the $90 Colt Thunderer I got from the same junk box a few months ago, but I’m happy.
