S&W M1917 with no "US Property" markings ?
I've been searching for a Smith & Wesson M1917 to buy and came across one in the 17,000 serial number range but is has no "US Property" markings on the barrel. For such a serial number it has to be a military issue, correct ? Is is possible the markings were missed or a barrel was swapped out for some reason ?

Not possible for the markings to have been skipped. Is the a S&W emblem under the cylinder release?
Photos would helps us determine what you are looking at.

The weapons is for sale on another forum. I don't think it's appropriate to post the guy's ad here but I'll try to send you a link to it via PM. Perhaps you can share your thoughts on it here?

The US property stamp on the barrel is pretty light wouldn't be very hard to make it go away many were altered in this fashion.

I understand that after the war some folks who bought surplus 1917s were concerned abo9ut the "US Property" makings and polished them off with a refinish or a blue touch up. I think the fear was that the guns weren't legit and could get an owner/purchaser in legal trouble for having a stolen gun. Also, maybe a few followed soldiers home rather than being turned in...J MHO

Thanks. I am going to go with either it was removed by a person for those reasons or perhaps the finish has been removed there and it just can't be seen anymore. It otherwise does look like a military issued M1917.

As long as it has a serial number stamped on the butt and the price isn't too high, the lack of the barrel marking isn't a big deal, providing you aren't looking for a collector's item.

Several years ago I took a M1917 to a gunsmith and he had a part time worker that was a deputy. The deputy looked at the gun then I saw him point out the Govt property markings to the gunsmith. The gunsmith said don't worry about it, the gun is ok. Larry
