I'm not into nickel but...
I could not pass on this one. Recently bought one of my grail guns from a seller in Texas and he made me a package deal on both.
I guess it just looks like it means business? Unsure how to describe it...
I wonder what stories Austin PD number 19 could tell?
Been a trash week - my pics appear to be no exception.

I can't remember the rack number of the one I had, but the serial number was a fairly easy one to remember - even nearly 20 years after I traded it away: S 89898. I bet it's now owned by someone in this forum.

Here is one my old partner had. RIP Bobby. Tried to buy it from him back then but, oh well.

.38/44 HD from the early 1950's. Appears to be in nice shape for an old PD gun. Not sure if anyone from APD has any records that could help with the history of it.

Nothing wrong with that. It should be quite the shooter.

It's my understanding that when Austin PD decided to replace their Heavy Duty's they put out a contract for bids and S&W got the contract. They were inspected and repaired as needed, re-nickeled and APD sold them. That is my understanding but, if any one familiar with that situation can correct me or add to this please post. They were and are fine shooting revolvers.

I carried one of those when I first joined APD in 1969.

Do you remember when they got rid of them and went with another weapon?

We changed from the 38/44 to the Nickel Mod 27 in Feb. 1973.
