US army 1917....semi target....44 special... clearer pictures added.
I like different guns.
Modified ones too.
This certainly fit that category.
The price was good and the grips sealed the deal.
It originally shipped as a 5 1/2" gun to the US military.
A few pictures before range time for those that like the oddities.
I have a feeling this one's going to like me.

Nice catch. Looks like it's original finish and still a 5 1/2". Great combat sights.

The picture is pretty deceiving Jim.
It was listed on the tag as 6 1/4"
It's pretty weird that they tried to number the barrel the same and that 2 on the barrel flat also seems strange to me.

Cool, longer barrel for a target gun would be my preference. I guess 1/4” was lost remounting it in the 1917 frame, but no worries.
Is there a serial # on the back of the cylinder? I haven’t seen many 1917s converted to .44. Very cool.

That was one of the guns of my Walter Mitty phase, one I dreamed of as I went about my hum drum life. It's not like the one I daydreamed about, it is the one! Congratulations!

There is Jim
It's just as messed up as the barrel picture right now though.
Unfortunately It will be Sunday until I can get good clear ones.
It's pretty blurry but seems to match.

So, the barrel and cylinder match each other but not the frame? Sounds like a swap happened to create a 44 S&W Special. Maybe not exactly a bubba but …

When you get it post some clearer images, please. The rear sight is interesting but I will reserve comment until another image is posted.

Interesting that the cyl # doesn’t match extractor star which must have the original .44’s serial #.

That's what I am thinking that They tried to make the barrel and cylinder numbers match and didn't bother with that.
Here it is at the range with another oldie.
It's hitting about a foot low so I'll work the front sight down some.

Regarding the rear sight, it appears they cut a flat between the rear sight and the eye? And lowered the top of the frame between the front and rear sight?

I think this is the picture you want Kevin.
I like what they did as it makes for fast and precise alignment.

Thank you,Paul.
The wider front sight and enhanced rear sight should make for great targets.
I like revolvers that have sight modifications. It shows someone at sometime was interested in having the bullets hit where the shooter intended them to go.

On that note Kevin with alterations already done, to finish it, a gold bead in the front sight may be added.

My S&W Model 1917 with added gold bead. Front sight modified from 1/2 moon to slant.
And my S&W Model 25-2 with a gold bead in a Patridge.
The barrels on both revolvers have been shortened and resighted.

As a 45 guy Kevin I may as well throw this out there. it's nice when back in the day the shooter could just order something different too 😀

25-2 with a 3 1/2 " barrel ordered as a pinto with the red post.
Probably my one real collector gun.

In my first post I said I expected the gun to like me.
Wow was I wrong.
It's been a struggle to get it to perform.
That struggle included 2 stuck bullets with a book load.
Hitting a full foot low.
Finally after some work.
And switching to the skeeter load were starting to get along.
Height is good and it only hits an inch or so to the left of POA

Sorry to hear about stuck bullets. I always have a range rod handy, actually three, a 38, a 44 and a 45. I only shoot 45 and very occasionally a 38/44 but the 44 has come in handy for other shooters. Mine a brass, just under bore diameter and I also keep a mallet in the range box.
Glad to hear the Skeeter load works for you. The only Skeeter load with which I am familiar is for the 38/44. What is the one for the 44 S&W Special?

A Keith style lead semi wadcutter of about 240-250 grains over 7.5 grains of Unique.
