Default Help on M13 aircrewman

Hi guys, I am looking at a S&W M13 aircrewman revolver. It does not have a S&W letter, which makes me a bit wary. What do the experts here think, based on these 3 pictures of aircrewman specific markings I snagged? For additional info, it is in the proper serial range (C301602), back of cylinder and bottom of barrel marked with serial, grips marked. I appreciate any help, as I am leery of paying too much for a fake. I know a factory letter would be definitive, but I do not have time to wait on one. Any tell tales I am missing here?

That sure do look like the ones I have owned with letters.
Nice deep, crisp stamp.

You are smart to be cautious on the M13 Aircrewman as so many are incomplete or forged.

Here's my opinion....

Pro... matching serial numbers on the barrel flat, rear of cylinder, and frame. The markings on backstop and frame look correct. Matching serial number on the stocks (which isn't as common as probably believed as they were swapped around by various armorers).

Con.. three pics aren't near enough for us to give a definitive yes or no.

A few other things to look for is the serial on the rear of the ejector and the "P" mark on the left side of frame. Place close attention to the right side of barrel to make sure it is marked correctly. It should be a 4 screw as well.

As you know, these revolvers aren't cheap so be careful. FWIW, the serial number isn't listed in the database as a known Aircrewman. (That only means it hasn't been documented by this forum, not to be confused as non existing.) The serial number you provided would have shipped in 1954, most likely.

Kevin Will should be around to give you his opinion.

Good luck,
Hank

Looking back through the pics I can add a couple more pros...

I clearly see the proof "P" in the proper place. You have the 11 groove flat latch which is the right latch for that time. The barrel looks correct with proper markings.

When you had it in your hands did it feel way too light for a revolver? They don't weigh much and that's the first thing you really should notice.

So...you say serial number C301602 is on the barrel flat, cylinder, and frame...When you hold it again, look under the ejector, if the same number is there, then I believe you are looking at an original, unmolested aircrewman.

That is my opinion based on the 6 pics and your testimonial. Don't buy it based on what I have stated but FWIW, if I saw that gun and confirmed all the serial numbers, I would be a buyer for the right price.

Hope this helps. Good luck with the negotiations!!!

Thanks for the replies, especially firemanhank. Based on additional info I received from another board member by message, I believe this is a correct aircrewman.
