The presentation case has the serial number of the revolver written on the bottom in white grease pencil.

Yep, those late production Combat Magnums are pretty stunning! Couldn't you have gotten one of the first 4, Bill? I think that either you or Lee posted that only the fist dozen or so had the black cases...

Think I read that the Combat Magnums started with SN 260001. That would make this gun the 5th one produced. Makes sense that it was shipped to a writer probably for an article.
Does not get any better.
I see Randy beat me to the punch. Must learn to type faster.

I have verified eight Combat Magnums that shipped with a case numbered to the revolver. The serial numbers and shipping dates are widely varied from K260006 shipped on January 3,1956 (first Combat Magnum shipped) to K264185 shipped on March 21, 1957. It is unknown why these guns were shipped with a presentation case. The only reference to a presentation case I could find in S&W's literature was in their accessories sheet from late 1956 where a case for a 44 Magnum and a .357 Combat Magnum were listed at $5.00.
I discussed cased Combat Magnums in the S&WCA Journal, volume 46, number 2, Summer 2012, pp. 29-30.
The first production .357 Combat Magnum completed on December 15, 1955 has serial number K260003 (the date in the caption under the photo is incorrect). It was kept in the factory collection and engraved by Alvin White in 1961 for presentation to President John F. Kennedy. The presentation was never made and the gun was eventually sold to a well known collector who had it for over thirty-five years before I acquired it in 2011. I loaned the .357 to the museum in Springfield for over two years where it was part of a display. Click on the photo for a better look.

The last time I was assigned a CM it was locked in a big circular GI revolver rack.

Bill-I had a very close relationship with a blue 4 inch 19-3 in the 70’s. I’ve always thought they are beautiful guns. Yours is truly special. I enjoyed meeting you in Concord. You always have interesting posts on the Forum. Jim

Bill:
Both CMs posted are outstanding examples of the K-Frame .357 Magnum.
Thanks for sharing,
Richard

Bill,
The still laugh (sorta) about the story you told me about how you were first offered, then 10 years later aquired that beautiful gun!
It taught me a lesson!!

I think they are the nicest set of ivory grips ever to see this forum. They check all the boxes for me. The gun is very nice also. I really like the theme and if I ever have a gun engraved I would lean in a patriotic direction.
