Default Pre 29?

I have a 44 Magnum, serial number 177XXX, 6 1/2 inch barrel Smith & Wesson revolver. Is this a pre 29?

Oh goodness, there's that pesky "pre" description again. Some here are happy to use that term, others not so much. But yes, I'd happily call it a pre-29 44 Magnum as long as there is no 29 stamped in the yoke area and might add that it is a four screw. I have one not too far away from yours (S172898). If you add pictures of the entire gun folks might be able to tell you a little more about it. Welcome to the Forum.

Thank You Sir, and no 29 in the yoke area.

Looks good, shows a little wear in the right places, and has correct stocks ("cokes"); nice 44 Magnum. . . .or pre-29 as some might say. Enjoy it.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! By the way, there is an S prefix on that serial number. The S may be separated from the numbers but it is part of the serial.

Default That's a beauty!

Very nice 4-screw .44 Magnum...and totally correct. I have her sister, s/n S177963. Mine is also 6-1/2" bbl., blued, with Coke Bottle stocks. According to Doc44, 2 of these revolvers shipped in July 1958- maybe it was yours and mine! Do you have the original presentation case and goodies with your .44 Magnum? Mine came with a much later mahogany presentation case, but I wish I had the original blue/black pebble grain box. Enjoy!

Just curious, why do people post a incomplete serial number with XXX. What am I missing?

The long-standing traditional theory, probably apocryphal, is that if one posts the entire serial number publicly, some miscreant with ill intent immediately files a police report with that serial number showing it to be stolen, sends the police to your home, and they reclaim the miscreant's property for him.

I doubt that this has ever happened, but every day brings new adventures. . .

It never hurts to be paranoid in a world wherein everyone IS out to get you.
