Date on an old 22
I’ve had this for a while. Love the way she shoots. Not in great shape but beautiful to me. Just an old .22. Any thoughts on year of manufacture?
Thanks, T4

Probably 1952. Known as pre model 17, excellent revolver.

I have one only 20 numbers away (K143198) which I also show as 1952 although I don't have a letter for it. You'd need a letter to find out where it shipped and the exact date. Nice guns, some of the best S&W ever built in my opinion.

According to Jinks, History of Smith & Wesson (Eleventh Printing, Page 190) 1952 is the correct response.
While it is entirely possible, albeit improbable, there may be other sources. I'll suggest such sources be viewed with a measure of skepticism.

I have one just a bit older without a doubt the most accurate handgun I own.

Based on a lot of K prefix numbers and associated dates, I would have to agree that 1952 is most likely. But, as Jeff stated, a letter would be the best way to determine the actual ship date.

Or; you can join the S&WCA which allows you to ask Roy Jinks. He will respond with month and year shipped.

Yes, but only month and year. The letter will give you the precise date and the location to which it shipped.
Another advantage to membership in this regard is the discount on the price of a letter.

I have K3251, shipped 5 years before yours, so it shows this was a very popular revolver. I love mine. Outshoots my 617, my Single-Six and my Single-Ten, all set up for targets.

A little more information. The manufacturing date range is K136,691 – K175,637...1952
If for some reason you want an exact shipping date, that will require getting it lettered.
Model numbering for this model began in 11/1958 at SN K326533
At the time yours was sold, it would have been officially called a K-22 Masterpiece by S&W. It could be called a pre-Model 17, but that is collector-speak, not a factory name.

Those K-22s built in the first decade after WW II just seem to be right for me. Mine comes from about five years earlier and it never fails to please. I got it in a purely serendipitous way… I stayed ‘til the end of an auction and all the big spenders had tired out and probably got it at a bargain, but you won’t hear me complain!

Great info gentlemen. Thanks for all the help. The K22 rides the hip on many of my woods walks.
