Just got the letter on this one.
Registered Magnum SN# 50205 Reg.# 1898 Shipped to LT (later Rear Admiral)J W Schmidt Feb 1937 aboard the USS Jacob Jones
Gun is in 97% ORIGINAL finish..unfortunately the Magnas are long gone
I have been researching this gun for a while, and it has been pretty neat. As soon as I find more it'll probably go to the WTS ads to fund 44 magnum pursuits.

FYI here is the history of the USS Jacob Jones. As she was commanded at the time by a LCDR, it is likely LT Schmidt was the Executive Officer.

Apparently Rear Admiral Schmidt was quite the painter as I have found several ship paintings by him circa 1960'. Here's is one he did of the CSS Alabama

Cool history. Much more interesting than one shipped to a gun store in New York. I wonder if Lt. Schmidt ever shot at a Japanese or German with it?

Interestingly enough the USS Jacob Jones left port not soon after the gun was shipped.

Very interesting history! Have you requested the military records of Lt. Schmidt? It would be great to know if he was still assigned to the Jacob Jones when it was sunk and if he was lost at sea or was one of the survivors.

Oops, guess I didn't read closely enough. Apparently he survived up into the 1960's. Was he on board when the Jacobs was torpedoed?

Great gun.
Rather scarce barrel length.
I can't help but wonder if he kept it onboard. If so, that would mean that gun was at the Normandy Invasion. Cool.

Great history on a classic S&W. Makes me wonder how many RM went down with the ship during WWII. With wars raging in the Atlantic and Pacific,including pilots being shot down and the Merchant Marine ships sunk,my guess would be more then a few were lost.

Great Reg Mag. I remember reading about this gun a few years back. It also reminded me to ask you a question. Do you know who made the non-S&W stocks that were on your Reg Mag in your original post?

Ash,
I believe the aftermarket target grips were made by Sile. The only markings were "Made in Italy" on the backs.
