K-38 Masterpiece _UPDATE
Just picked up this K-38 Masterpiece at auction. The pictures weren't the best so I was pleased to see that it was in fantastic condition. It came to me with the target hammer and target stocks which I don't think were standard. Came with a box numbered to another gun. Shipped in 1954.

I have a 1954 Stoeger catalog, on the page with The S&W Masterpiece Line there is a section called Accessories for the Masterpiece Target Revolvers. Target Hammer, $5.50 extra and Target Stocks with Built-In Adapter, $8.25 extra. Add to the whopping $71.50 for the revolver itself. I'm not sure what the "built-in adapter" is for the Target Stocks, the pic in the catalog looks just like your stocks. Nice grab, that's a beauty.

It probably refers to the front strap being covered by the wood material of the larger stocks...Up until that era S&W offered only Magnas as a hand filler... ...Ben

Thank you Fullmetaljacket! I would be interested in seeing that page of the Stoeger catalog. Any chance you would be willing to post a pic?

My 1952 K38 has a target hammer, regular trigger. I didn't buy it with the original grips though. The 4th S&W says the relief cut stocks like yours started in approximately 1955, so without a letter it would be difficult to call. Mine is a terrific shooting machine.

What he said---specifically filling the space between the front strap and the trigger guard.

Great five screws. Great gun. Great stocks. Boxes are not for target grips, I suppose. What do I know? I know you will enjoy shooting that. It looks shot little on the ejector rod, to me. Nice pair. Maybe someone swapped magnas for targets stocks? 148 grain lead wadcutters are good for its diet. Enjoy.

Very nice 5 screw "Heavy Masterpiece"
The stocks are pre 1963 by the checketing pattern, the football relief cut puts them more likely into post 1955 IMO.
The reference to the early target stocks having an "Adapter" is referring to the fact that the very earliest Target stocks utilized a black plastic insert ( those stocks are very rare), IIRC they appeared briefly around 1950 but quickly changed to the all wood non relieved walnut target stocks which had a run of about 5-6 years until the Combat Magnum was introduced and the football shaped relief cut was added to clear the longer .357 casings.

.375" short throw was standard. Mine came to me with a .500" Target hammer, but no idea if it shipped that way.

yep.... K-38 was the standard issue at the CHP Academy. They gave you an option to use the standard issue k-38, or take $125 cash to buy your own revolver. Most of us took the cash and bought a Model 19... especially after the Range master, Bill Davis, gave us a demo comparing the two rounds....

Beautiful K38, I love the K Series revolvers. That's great that the letter confirms the target hammer and stocks, perfection!
My K38 is from 1949, but its buddies are equally special.

Traded for this Model 14-1 with member Hughww (RIP) a couple of years ago. This one will be the last to leave.
