Default M&P Model of 1905 4th Change (Target)

I have always been fond of these old revolvers. This is my first one to have the target sights. I was informed by the Historical Society that this one was shipped from the factory in September of 1923. The revolver is actually nicer than my photo skills indicate.

Very nice, lamarw

I assume the stocks don't number to the frame, since the medallion appears to be the recessed gold type and by 1923 no medallion was used.

Nevertheless, the CW stocks are awfully nice looking.

If your serial number is above 379988, you're (probably) saved from uncertainty concerning your sights. The uncertainty arises from the execution of the design. The design called for tempering the tang---as a spring----loosen the hold down screw, and the sight rises. Not too shabby in concept, but poorly executed.

The S&W folks had problems tempering the tang---too little-too much---with the sweet spot somewhere in between. The even worse news arises from S&W's obsession with using up the old before moving on with the new. This sight came into being in 1911, thereabouts----and stayed in being until 1923, again, thereabouts.

It is known as the "Large Screw Spring Up" sight---"Large Screw", as the hold down/elevation screw has a larger than usual head.

If you get one with the tempering in the middle of the range (or above), you may count your blessings for the bonus of the sight not shooting loose-----first one ever. Otherwise, you may tear your hair out, as did more than a few folks over the life span of this unfortunate experiment----from 1911 until 1923---during which time the production/sales of target models dropped from about 10% of total to around 2%--so sayeth the folks in a position to know about these things.

Thanks Jack and Ralph for the additional information. Jack is correct and the stocks are not original to the revolver. The serial number for this one is 456169. Therefore I am be-damned with the stocks and lucky with the 2% later sights. I think I did OK with a $575.00 price tag plus buyer's premium and shipping cost.

Now that there is a mighty purty .38, Lamar! If you ever mosey down my way with her, I'll distract you with a libation while I cuddle with that sweetheart.
