This is one of ten Model 29s with a 5 1/2-inch barrel that were shipped to H. H. Harris in Chicago, IL in May 1960. Three others (that I know of) were shipped to other distributors about the same time.

Doc44, Can you tell us more?
Were they a special order or special offer, a test? What was their reasoning/ why was S&W trying this new length?

H. H. Harris ordered ten Model 29s with a 5 1/2-inch barrel and since he was a high volume dealer, S&W made what he ordered. I also heard once that he was possibly connected to the Wesson family through marriage, but I can't remember the details and don't know if it is true. Harris was always interested in the police market in Chicago, so maybe he was trying to find the ideal barrel length for a peace officer's 44 Magnum (although, I doubt such a length really existed). Harris was always ordering revolvers with uncataloged barrel lengths and received at least one, if not two, 1926 Target revolvers with a 5-inch barrel.

Beautiful! H.H. Harris must have had a lot of rarities come through their store. My .22 M&P (Post Office) passed through there back in July 1958 (per factory letter). Thanks for sharing the pic.

This is correct. H.H. Harris also regularly advertised 5 inch K38s, which were popular enough that I never understood why those, like the 5 inch Model 29, never became standard production items.

That is just preposterous. EVERYBODY knows that the ideal barrel length for a S&W .44 mag is 5-5/16 inches!
Doc, betcha don't got one of those!
